couldn't find a pic to see how far it sticks out tho, so it may not be shallow enough

if that's not shallow enough then what about the rear water outlet? would you make something custom?

re: water outlets - I'm going to see if the Y-powered Hilux or 180B will fit and point the right way. My initial plan of 20mm adaptor with 7MGTE thermostat housing ended up way too tall. The benefit of the 7M housing was two threaded holes that I could use for the bypass line (from the water pump) and the hot outlet to the cabin heater - plus you could undo one to help bleed the system.

I was thinking about how you could attach a 1-tooth wheel trigger to one of the cam pulleys .. the obvious solution is an adaptor out the front as per Sam_Q's dizzi adaptor. However, I was wondering whether you could mount a rare-earth magnet on the back of the wheel and point a VR sensor at it from behind. Just not sure whether a VR sensor would get too much noise from the rest of the wheel (even if you had alloy adjustable gears, the toothed section should ideally be steel).

My kit only moves the dizzy cap and rotor so it still sticks out a bit.

I guess the ideal solution would be to have a completely different position for the sensors and have the hole plugged up in the back of the head. The it would only stick out as far as the water pipe would go which could be made quite flat.

What's the ID of the relieved area in the front of the crank pulley? AU Balancers have a 36-1 trigger on them that presses on, they are easily removed and if the ID is in the vicinity you can machine the pulley to a press fit and press it on. Then use a bracket to mount the sensor. Works well.

    ID of relieved area: 114mm

    other measurements:
mount (pulley removal) holes: 67mm centre-to-centre
depth from raised face to milled area @ holes:21mm (e.g. would have to be >21mm or it would be affected by motion of the outer balancer part)
OD of hole down to mount holes: 79mm (but would have to be 3-4mm less as the milled section does not reach the edge and it is cast finish anyway)
OD of milled area for washer face: 49mm (actual washer is wider)
    crank snout hole:`31mm

For the $10 to buy a 36-1 trigger wheel in a variety of sizes why would you bother pulling the balancer off a dirty coon and rooting around with it? Just modify a bought one to be a press fit if u dont like the idea of bolting it...

The ford trigger wheel is of the EDIS variety - proven tooth design, light, msextra has no problems with the tooth pattern, I have an EDIS VR sensor. I can see what JZK25's getting at as it would be a simple mod to fit a wheel over the outer face.

The EDIS wheels are a popular item for folks converting motors to EFI and/or waste-spark.

But ... I think the EA unit looks like this:

whereas I would need something that looks a little more like this:

But as noted earlier, http://www.trigger-wheels.com/store/.../en-uk/d5.html have a wheel that fits (the 5.75" wheel with 4.5" hole item).

edit: rather than machine the face to make a trigger wheel press-fit, I'd do something like drill & tap M5 holes on the inner edge of the trigger wheel, e.g. hole centre where it touches the raised edge of the balancer - then loctite in some cap-head bolts. They'd hold the ring on plus the prevent rotation of the trigger wheel.

Press fitting is better than bolting to the inner puller area. I have seen the carnage that can cause.

we did both on my ring gear.
Press fit + bolts for bonus security.

any thoughts on just notching out the 36 -1 teeth on a standard (sintered?) balancer and mounting the sensor to suit?

i really need to get off my ass and get this megajolt conversion happening, once ive got that done i can start on the wiring etc.
will probably have to get the balancer rebalanced, bugger... whole rotating assy got done when i built the motor.

AU trigger is no good, too small for your balancer.
