Default Engine choice for an AE86

    Hi,

I have 2x AE86, one has the 4A-GE in it already, the other is a rolling shell. I am stuck with what to put in it.

I have an S15 SR20DE with all wiring, extractors, clutch, flywheel, RB20 and SR20 boxes but need mounts to suit and a tail-shaft. It makes about 120kW according to Google when new.

I have a 3T-GTE that has some wiring, a W55 gearbox, needs a turbo, bellhousing, flywheel and clutch (which I have on my TA63 Celica GT-T and will probably upgrade those bits to have hand-me-downs for the Sprinter). Also needs engine mounts to suit. It makes about 120kW stock but most likely easier to get a bit more.

I also have a 1UZ-FE with VVTi and 5 speed auto out of a 1999 LS400 (complete car still here too). I have a W58 gearbox to convert to manual if needed but I think this is over the top for the car. Will need mounts and tailshaft also. Makes about 215-225kW and is plenty for the car. Currently, I am looking for an XT130 Corona for this engine, as I think that is the best way to use it.

I do think the 3T-GTE will look more "correct" in the car and I think I need TE72 mounts (??) to simplify the install.

Any suggestions on what I need? I have obviously over-simplified things but it's a start. I don't really want another 4A-GE and that car will probably get sold off to fund other stuff. I also don't really want to buy yet another engine but if I have missed out something really good, let me know. I think I only need 200kW tops as I may be using it as a fun track car/potential drift but in reality, once it is finished, it will probably only get driven to car shows/barely used.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

to go with a 3TGTE, you would have to change to the TE72 crossmember, which doesnt have provision for the steering rack since TE72 used recirculating ball steering, not racoon peanut like the AE86.
The 3TGTE is also getting pretty old these days.

SR20 isnt too big a deal, i believe you can get mounting kits to suit SR20-> AE86/AE71 conversions. This might be an alright option... but if you are going to the effort of converting to a 2L motor why not go to something more interesting and TURBO?

1UZ is a bit of a squeeze, but would be an awesome conversion if your local authorities allow it.

I hate to say it, but the easiest option for the AE86 is to whack a 4age in there... and turbo it.
    ...... butt scratcher?!

turbo 4AG into an AE86 would be a piece of piss. SR20DET wouldnt be much harder. depends on your preferences...

add a low boost turbo set up to the sr20, will surely get an easy 200kw with good tuning.

Why not work the 4AGE and slap some ITB's on there =P That would look sexy!

The car won't be registered in the time I own it (have no interest, what with 6 cars and 4 kids, would rather spend rego money on food or something). If I feel the need to drive it, I will probably get movement permits to take it places (or if all goes to plan, I will have trade/dealer plates) once or twice a year. I want to have it as a track car but most likely will be too busy to ever track it. I don't want a second 4A-GE in this shell as I will have to buy another engine (and I might still turbo the complete one at this stage). I like the idea of the 3T as it will look at home, the age doesn't bother me as my Celica will need a freshen up and hopefully by building 2 engines, it works out cheaper.

The SR20 option, I can get the necessary parts to turbo it free/cheap enough and it seems I only know people who mess around with S13/S14's. But then it doesn't look right at all, might even keep me awake at night being Nissan/Toyota combo.

The 1UZ I am on the hunt for the Corona right now, i think that will suit the car perfectly, might go ITB on that (if they do VVTi versions) and an exhaust (on the quiet side though). Will keep that registered though and reverse-engineer it once it gets stickered. That will probably on get driven once a fortnight so odds are good to be defect free for a while.

another option is maybe piss off that dirty datsun engine and locate a BEAMS engine. with quads, decent exhaust and ECU tuning you can crank out 130-140rwkw and plenty of torque (or highest average peak HP for vito) which will be more than enough to turn the tyres.
plus you can keep your cross member, and you already have a W series box.
    N/A for life...
