Default 7MGTE Woes Input Appreciated (Problem Solved you'll never guess how)

    Hey Guys

Well after the great weekend at dubbo with little hastles, i got my car back to sydney and was cruiseing the Cross a week later, she cooked. The thermostat locked shut and it all got hot and I got stranded in the city.

Anyways the car is now back together, the head was decked with a new 2nd generation stock h/g installed and tourqued down with ARP studs.

However I now have a problem the car will stall when its loaded up. Its all jacked up at the moment and will stall as soon as you start to slip the clutch. It won't even turn the driveline over with the wheels off the ground.

The engine will start fine, runs smooth as at idle and with rev with no load. Timing is set at 7ish deg, I've checked that the cams are all lined up at TDS.

I've got a spare set of coil packs and ignitor to try tommorrow to see if its breaking down spark however any thoughts comments would be appreciated

    fault with the AFM?

usually an engine will run and idle ok without AFM operating, as soon as the engine gets loaded up tho, there is nothing to meter the air and its freaks out, usually stalling.

    give that a try.....

or fuel pressure?? (or lack of, to be more correct!)

When i had my AFM unplugged, i could drive my car just over idle until it went all haywire.

it should idle fine at least, if it was AFM.

drive line is diffenatley not locked up. I turned over with a bit of revs but was happy and stalled all at the same time, plus I was turning the tailshaft over by hand when i had to un do the tail shaft bolts for another issues I had and sorted.

    So AFM eh
I may have to borrow one to test, however as I wrote above it still do rev fine with zero load

weird - no AFM usually means fuel for idle only so engien wont rev.

you sure the TPS is OK? it might be telling the ECU it's shut and a trying to idle.

yeah, like i said, i can slip my car into drive and have it loaded up, and it will start rolling, ive even driven a short while down the road with the afm disconnected, before it fubared itself and i pulled over and found the problem.

i know mate, just getting rid of the AFM notion, because its not that.

what if you rev it, then slip the clutch a bit?

surely you can get it spinning slightly by keeping the clutch at 50% while it spins up to speed enough to engage it fully?

then you might be able to leave it in gear and let off the gas to see if it idles...

i don't know anything about a 7m, but i was thinking that one of the ways a computer would know an engine was under load was via manifold pressure.
as a general question before suggesting anything, At idle or revs, is there any manifold pressure, compared to if there was any manifold pressure when the engine was under load (in gear)?
next would be does a 7m measure manifold pressure (as someone stated it has a AFM)?

sorry i can't help i just find this problem really interesting and would love to know how yoyyu would go about solving it.

I also assume you never took the block out either? so that would rule out anything from the block to the rear wheels. that just leaves head and above, we assume the head is fine and sealed alright and nothing is mechanically fouling, so that would then just leave anything that connects to the head, like electrical and vaccuum lines, fuel etc.

7Ms dont have MAP (except for gauge in an MA70) so that isnt it. AFM was my first thought when he asked me about it, but without load he can free rev it hard enough to operate the BOV so that seems unlikely too. I lent him the other coil pack and ignitor incase something is breaking down under load to test with.
Cmon eldar, I really think he'd have noticed if his drivetrain was seized, more than just the engine dying would happen when he took his foot off the clutch!

Matt, worth covering ground, as you, of all people should know, solving problems is done by elimination, yes, this means even the stupid stuff has to be covered
