yeah, i thougth you were dialing them in
if you shave the head, you move the cam timing... since distance between cam pulleys and crank pulleys decreases.. that should retard them(?)
don7t worry abotu shims, rather than measuring angle vs opening, measure the valve opening vs angle...
ie, record valve opening off dial indicator every 20deg (or whatever amount) and graph it, and you will be able to find the cam centreline and thus timing.
eg
then work out how many degrees they need to move, makr pulley accurately, adjust pulley, and remeasure
shouldn't be too difficult..
re dyno time to set pulleys... yes you could (and it would help) but measure where they are first, then put them to where they "should be" if they are out, then see how butt dyno feels.
if it all gets too hard.. then dyno.
and yes, dyno guy should have been aware of it in the first place, but may not have known the head was shaved, or the consequence of that?

check and confirm TDC with a piston stop... no piston stop? don't waste your time
MOST cams (cam cards) come with timing for zero clearance, and for .040"(1mm) or .050"
*IF* you choose to check @ zero lash... all you need to do is set lash to zero on one cylinder - #1 usually. Easy enough to set it back to proper running clearance before you start up

i started dong this exact thing tonight on my smallport, the problem i had was i cannot possibly fit a dial indicator onto the shim. Is there any other way i can measure?

Yeah... it is a bit of a mission to get the dial indicator properly aligned with the valve, and damn near impossible to sit the tip on the shim. I had to buy a special fitting to use in place of the standard nose on the DTI. It has a tiny ball joint so that the end of the feeler can be bent to the side. That way you can reach under and sit the end on the shim.

if you are just looking for point of max lift then measure the lobe at an opposite cylinder
on 4age when #1 valves are at max lift #4 lobes should be pointing upwards (in relation to valve angle) which you will see on the DTI
There is no substitute for PUBIC inches

hmm but if you measure of the lobe not the actualy real lift (off shim) you cant take into account for differences in each side of the cam as they can be made different each side of the lobe therefore your after your mathematics you will have an incorrect max lift point
