There will be a link if the chain is aftermarket. I'm not sure about the stock ones?... Knowing where the chains line up is a different story, if you can't access it properly...

You line the chain up via the TDC of the pistons(check with a screwdriver down the plug hole, not the mark on your crank pulley). From there you set the camshafts so that the grooves on the top are at the top, line them up with the arrows on your No 1 cam caps. Ive never seen aftermarket chains with the shiny links, so that idea will go out the window anyway and you will have to line them up as i have described. Im not sure if OEM chains have the breaker links, but they can be removed with bolt cutters etc. It isnt really that difficult, just time consuming and frustrating.

    Hi,

I have scans on setting up the chains, tensioning and timing set-up for the 2T-G. Actually, I have the entire 2T-G shop manual scanned. This is the official Tractor Works (Toyota) manual. It covers the carbie 2T-G engine. If you PM me I can copy and mail you a copy of the CD, or if you wait until tomorrow I'll try and post up the relevant section here.

Thanks river, I have PM'd you my address cos I want that CD!! But in the meantime, if you can post up all the stuff on the timing gear would be really helpful as I am pulling the cam cover off on Sat morning. And would be useful for others too!!

I haven't read this whole thread, BUT have you checked the cam timing is right??

This can also create chain noise. To check you take off the valve cover and check that both notches near the cam gears are at TDC when you are a TDC on the crank.

Hope that makes sense. There is adjustment on the cam gears to align them properly if the chain is worn a little.
If its your bottom chain then you either put up with the noise or replace it.

    Hope this helps,
    Simon

Pretty sure its the top chain, and I thought I did the timing right but I will check tomorrow. Its only started since I took the head back off, it didnt do it before then so maybe something is slightly out... thanks for your help Simon

DO NOT FORGET, the cams will either be at top dead centre, OR bottom dead centre when the crank is at top dead centre. This is because the cams rotate at half the speed of the crank. So dont go rotating your cams 180 degrees out of whack. Not that it matters too much, you would just have to rotate your dizzy another 180 degrees. Also if you removed much metal off the head or put a thinner head gasket in, your chain will be looser, which can cause your problem with an already worn chain.

Hmmm can this really affect it that much? It has 3T block, 2T-G head and headgasket (i think its around 1mm when compressed) and 0.8mm head shim.... but I think the 2T-G head has been shaved before hence why I had problems in the first place with the compression being too high.

    Hi,

Okay, I've been a good lad and dumped these pages here for you that will hopefully help you with setting up the chains in your beloved 2TG.

There's 11 images, so it will go over 2 posts.

River, you deserve all the +rep in the world!! But unfortunately I need to spread more love
Your manual told me something mine didnt - that you have to adjust the tensioner when no 4 piston is at TDC compression. Mine didnt say this, just breifly told you how to adjust the tensioner. And I also noticed one of my cams was a little out so I fixed that.... and now....

    No more noises!!! Yay!!

    Hi,

Great stuff. I'm glad that the info was helpful and the noise is sorted. Another 2T-G purring sweetly is reward enough.
