    For the plug,

I looked up the part number from my JZA80 wiring book for you and it is 90980-11162, I did a look up of the VVTi solenoid part number (15330‑46010) on www.toyodiy.com and it came up with some UZs so I am assuming the VVTi solendid and hence plug are the same. If you check this you should be able to order the plug from Toyota

Or a google search showed up one on ebay too...

Secondly, regarding the VVTi operation here are some things that I remember...

    1) You need closed loop if you want to 'hold' a position (i.e. anything more complex than ON/OFF or VVT style operation). You can't run the VVTi as VVTi open loop. Even if you know the hold position is say around 50%, 50.1% will go full advance, 49.9% will go full retard is my (note I'm not sure on the adv/ret direction, just making a point ).

    2) I'm pretty sure that without a driving signal to the VVTi solenoid that the cams do go to one extreme...

    3) I know you said you don't want to change the ECU, but upgrading the engine ECU really seems like the best option to me... some other options include finding something else to do the control such as an e420c Adaptronic to do the job (prbly the cheapest, most flexible, standalone, dual VVTi controller?) Or I think emanage ultimate can do VVTi control, not sure if dual tho?

That mechanism looks suspiciously like the cam change solenoid on my HVT Elantra engine, including the plug.
Find a Hyundai XD (series 2) Elantra 2004- (will have 2.0 HVT on the cam cover) at the wreckers.
Should be a lot cheaper than a Toyota part, that's if you can lower yourself to fitting a Hyundai part to your car

Been reading with interest (though also a lot of confusion) as I'm tossing up ECUs for my engine as may be going turbo.

I work for toyota, im a wire harness engineer (true story). I design the Hilux and camry wire harnesses. Long story short, Yes, i guarantee you that there is a part that fits that connector, probably on any toyota engine harness (or any engine harness of any car which is supplied by sumitomo or yazaki for wire harnesses) lol.

not really? i had never EVER touched an ecu in my life before i set up my adaptronic and i ended up getting it running well enough that i was able to drive it to the tuners on 10 minutes worth of mucking around with idle and configuring autotune to do the rest...
