    Default 1mz-fe to .....???

Hi all looking for a suitable gearbox to bolt to a 1mz to put in my corolla ae95
Needs to be east west manual with awd
Not done too much research but thinking a st185 gt4 box will bolt up and is similar to the ae95
Anyone know of anyone that has done this??
Or anyone that has put a mz series engine in anything like a rav4/corolla/celica??

Boxes that should fit straight up to the 1MZ
RAV4 manual, RAV4 auto, Caldina GTT auto, Camry Vista auto (V6 wagon available as AWD in Japan), RAV4 transfer case onto GT4/Caldina GTT manual box.
    Kluger/RX300/RX330 autos (1MZ & 3MZ share the same block).

manual GT4's & Caldina GTT's won't fit without grinding away at both the block & the transfer case, and I've never seen one finished enough to confirm that it works.

The only person I know that has done a successful and completed 1MZFE V6 into any AWD vehicle is Paul Woods from Woodsport in the UK. He did a 1MZFE into a Gen1 Rav4, and has a build thread on the problems and solutions he had to over come. You can find the thread over at TwoBrutal (Home of the V6, V8 and other insane MR2 conversion) or check the thread out here: http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/sho...php?19011-RaV6

finally got off my arse and went and looked at some gearboxs
ended up buying a group a st185 gt4 box and transfer
gearbox without centre diff and transfer bolt up to the 1mz like they were built for each other
doesnt look like much grinding and cutting ect is going to need to be done to fit the transfer onto the gearbox and clear the back of the engine block
probably going to get a scrap 1mz block to practise on so i dont screw my good one
very happy about the gearbox and am looking forward to continuing my conversion XD

I've been researching for what seems like a very long time on how to get a 1MZ into my AE95 corolla sedan. My conclusion is that I will have to also swap the transmission for a st185 or st205, but my biggest worry is clearing the transfer case. Please keep this thread current with you successes and failures.

yeh i just bought a dead camry with all the elctronics and accessories i need
i am going to practice my grinding skills on that block to see how much i need to attack it to get the transfer onto it
will let you know how that goes hopefully with some photos
Worldwalker whom i bought the st185 gt4 group a rally transmission off took a few photos of the imz on the tranny
am going to email him for those photos to show you how well it fits onto the v6 monster

If you use a Rav4 trans, it should fit straight up (well does to the 3VZ-FE anyway). The transfer case is smaller somehow.

Which model Rav4? year? transmission? 4wd? I have a manual transmission and I'd like to keep it that way. I'll go 4age before I go auto trans.

It is true that the 3vz/1mz/2gr have the same bolt patterns, but I don't think it's that easy. I wish it was.

Like you, I've also read that the transfer case on a Rav4 has been modified to fit a V6 block, but as far as I know only the auto trans come with V6 and 4wd. The older rav4 4wd has a 4 cyl engine, but that transmission will not bolt up to the 1MZ. Then I read an article that said to take the rav4 transfer case from a 2001-2005 rav4 sport and put it on a st185/st205 trans. I read terryo's article that he wrote about e-series transmissions so I pm'd him and asked him about putting the rav4 transfer case on a st185. He works on the e-series transmissions every day and he told me the rav4 trans case was not a direct bolt on to the st185 and it would also require some other not so easy modifications. I do appreciate terryo for taking the time to check that out for me. So in a nutshell, I don't think there is a rav4 manual trans with 4wd that is a direct bolt on to the 1MZ. That would be awesome if somebody could prove me wrong.

You need to talk to Hayden at WTF auto in Kelmscott. He's done this quite a number of times.

Or you could use a Camry box with superchared AW11 MR2 half shafts. Now finding hose in Aus may be a challenge but they use a Camry inner joint and Corolla FX-GT outer. Trademe.co.nz may be your friend there or a crowd like "Outercontrol" in Myaree

Do you know a few more specifics on what Hayden has done? Has he mated a 1MZ to a ST185/205 with xfer case and put it into a AE95? Does he have a username on Toymods so I can ask him some more detailed questions?

I'm in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Which is right in the middle of the states so contacting people in other countries by anything other than computer will be difficult. Aus seems to have a pretty good following for All Tracs. I wish I could just drive straight to his shop and ask him, but that would be impossible for me.

Sorry it's Tristan, Hayden is the autosparky who does mean things with 4wds.

    Try here http://www.wtfauto.com.au/

It has been done in NZ and they use Camry gearboxes not only with the 1MZ but with 1UZs in custom built 4wds. I haven't done this myself yet but it isn't impossible

3S & 1MZ/3VZ share the same bellhousing pattern.
So the trans from the first Rav4 with the 3S-FE "should" be a go. But because its the FE engine, and not the GE, that might mean its an "S" series box, not an "E" series, and I'm not 100% sure how interchangable they are.

But I've never done it, so do your own research first
