    Default W58 into 1j mx83 ?

Hey guys. I just recently bought a 1j mx83 and I want to do a manual conversion.

I've been looking into r154's and can't really find any so I started looking for w58's aswell.
So I have found a jza80 supra w58 gearbox for sale. Has anyone tried this before and it fits?
What's involved in a conversion like this to the trans tunnel and crossmembers. Also what would
You guys expect to pay for a w58 jza80 gearbox?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I did a W58 (JZA80 NA) + 1JZ-GTE into a transmission tunnel that would have close to zero clearance with those big 5-speed boxes.

Gearbox is sweet on the 1JZ. Been running fine for the last 5+ years. 216rwkw 14psi with a diff that was originally behind a 90kw engine. Stock twins.

cross member? there's close to no load (well, for my setup it is) being applied to the gearbox xmember. 3.0mm plate is fine.

I paid 1250$ for the whole W58 set, including transport from adelaide to perth, 7 years ago.

    Make sure you:
    1) resurface / regrind both clutch faces. Mine was done by some big brake workshop where they deal with brakes/clutches and nothing else.
    2) replace front (big) and rear bearings. Mine whine too much. This is a time consuming step, but worth the quietness.
    3) buy/install new OEM-spec clutch (the consumable part). You will have slippage for the first 200-500 km, but once it's run in, it's fine. But I only had one of my clutch faces re-grinded, not both.

You will have many hours of fun aligning the shaft into the (new, small) centre bearing located on the engine. It took me 2-4 hours. Dont want to do that again.

    Hope that helps.

Of course, new flywheel bolts and SS-spec allen key bolts for the assembly.

    Thanks heaps mate!
I'm guessing it's in your merc so there is no point me asking what pedal box you used. What clutch slave did you use?
    Cheers,

I forgot to also mention, the most important is the shifter position. For me, I had to modify (shorten) the position by 10-15mm... although on second thoughts... i didn't really have to modify it but I wanted it as centered as possible.

The face to shifter position is approximately 750mm or even more. I dont really remember but it was atleast 750mm.

The second is the height... as I had to also tilt the gearbox downwards (by 30mm?) due to lack of tunnel height at the shifter position region.

So that's the negative of the JZA80 shifter position on other vehicle bodies.

As for pedal box / clutch slave: I used the original merc one (which was a rare local wrecker find since they rarely came in manual!). It's not as soft as I'd like... but i've gotten used to it.

Hi mate, PM Rudi (RA35GT), I think he's got an R154 for sale, would be much more suited to such a heavy car than a W58! That said, if you're not a ham-fisted driver and you don't have a big single, a 58 should last fine.
