Dont be so quick to rule out the light truckers... those things will make an attempt to murder you at the first drop of rain... if you arent carrying a ton in the back, get rid of em..
Hey all;
As the title says, I have a 2WD Hilux ute; open diff. bog standard 22R everything...
On the way to work today, it felt to me like the rear end was constantly driven via one wheel only.
The only other time I have experienced something like this feeling was when an axle let go, however I'm 99% certain I havnt lost an axle.
I dont thrash the car etc, and Ive played around quite a bit with G series rears (putting them into other cars etc) and a G series axle is friggin hard to break at the best of times.
I drove home last night and all was fine, parked the car then the majority of the trip back to work this morning it was fine.
Admittedly the road was wet, however the car slid around corners like I was on oil. I seriously thought there was oil all over the road it was so slippery and quite dangerous to be honest.
In a straight line, plant the boot in 3rd and one wheel spun up, which the 22R isnt famous for. It also pulled a little to the side, like a when your in a high HP car that loses traction.
I pulled over after a while as the car was behaving the same, ie sliding everywhere on cornering and under heavy accelleration (I was only accellerating heavily to find the problem) , so I then changed my view from oil on the road to a flat tyre. Tyres were all inflated as per usual, and plenty of tread. (standard size light truck tyres only 6 months old)
To be honest the car usually behaves quite OK in the wet despite me carrying zip in the back; so Ive ruled out tyres, and ruled out oil leaking onto a tyre from diff. or a beastly 70 odd HP cutting loose!.
A quick check (with wheels on) fails to shed any light on oil leaks or anything awry with the rear end (well exterior that is)
rear brakes seem fine (not hot from failing to disengage etc , not dragging etc.)
My current thinking (without opening the rear up) is perhaps a pinion or a side gear / pin etc may have dropped making the thing a full time single spinner?
Anyone heard of this happening with G series open rears?.. Ive always found them so reliable and virtually indestructable........weird..!
Any experienced replies would be appreciated.
Cheers
Steve

Thanks Wa5. Ill check how it's going on the way home tonight as its dry now, however it has been wet for 2 days and no issues for nearly all this time, only last part of the trip this morning.
Sounds like the eye bushes in the front of the leaf springs should be checked.
Thanks Supra2. Ill check the bushes whilst I am it.
