Default Where to find replacement bolts/nuts/screws

Yeah so I wouldn't be surprised if this has been covered before, but I sure as hell can't find it..
What i'm asking is if anybody knows where to find general bolts/nuts/screws for my ta22, as a good number of mine had to be drilled out/broken when I stripped it, and most of the ones that came out intact are still not in good condition.

I have had a good look through online catalogues for genuine toyota parts dealers, and haven't had any luck. I have also heard of people just buying them from places that specialise in fasteners, but I have no way of measuring the threads I need, and some of the parts (for example the headlight adjustment screws) are very specific.
If anyone could help me out i'd really appreciate it.

Round up your philips head screw drivers & 10/12/14/17mm sockets, go to wreckers, pillage older toyotas for common bolts/fasters.

Toyota liked to raid the spare parts bin whenever they developed a new model so you'll find a lot of simple stuff is common. For instance, I found the hidden trim clips from newer Corona etc fitted my RA40 when I was building it, interior and exterior body screws will be the same for many models.

    DO NOT DO THIS!

I highly do not recommend this, an old bolt/nut/screw will be weak and not worth it. It may seem the cheap way to do it but when you radiator support bar or something important breaks because you used old bits the costs climb. Check out blackwoods or any fastenings stores. I bought myn off ebay, it was a kit for a FJ40 landcruiser from the USA, brand new bits.

Yeah I was looking at their catalogues, but the problem really is the fact that i'm not entirely sure what i'm looking for..
Out of curiosity, what did you search for to find the landcruiser kit? I saw you have an RA28.. were there a lot of matching bits or was a lot of it unusable??

Depends on what you're going to use them for, but the majority of stuff I'd be perfectly happy to reuse stuff from the wreckers. But if its critical, get something new. In fact I need to head there this week for that very reason. Sometimes it can be next to impossible to find what you're after, they do use some odd thread pitches now and then.

You can buy a thread gauge for like 20 bucks. Great if you're trying to figure out what size something is.

yeah, some of the stuff i'm looking to replace is visible though, so unless I find a really nice condition car at u pull it i don't know how much luck i'll have... I'm thinking at this point my best bet is to buy a thread gauge and start writing out a list... That or what gmonkey did (or a combination of the two)

think this might have been the kit i ordered, thought was a USA one but this one is AUS

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/310219240...84.m1423.l2649

all the bolts fitted and didn't round out the holes, had a few spares of some and short on a couple. then i just went to bunnings with one good one and found the exact same bolt on their shelves, trick is to run the two threads together if they run smooth then its a good match

Oh nice link... that kit looks like it'd sort me out pretty well
as for the more specialised ones they seem like they're pretty cheap on ebay anyway.. tax return can't come soon enough!

Take in samples to universal fasteners, (if they still exist - were on grand junction rd) they will be able to match what you have.

    huh? are you kidding?

your example is meaningless - the bolts that attach the radiator to the support panel are M8 body bolts and under so little strain that only an idiot would fuck the threads in them. The top radiator support panel in most toyotas are M6 so if they've been over-tightened, the thread WILL be fucked.

Sure, get new bolts or stuff that's tightened to a specified torque and has to maintain a specific strain (e.g. like flywheel or head bolts) - but this guy was talking about hardware to hold on trim. Are you seriously going onto eBay to buy new screws to hold on mudguards, or short stainless screws that hold down windscreen trim, or new M6 bolts to attach guards to the body?

Save your self some money, go on a scavenge hunt at your wreckers for a mix of M6 & M8 & M10 nuts & bolts. Also go for body screws with wide washer and stainless screws that you'll find around windscreens and front-trim. Learn to identify the bolt types (there will be a mix of self-tapping and non - depending on use) and re-use in a similar fashion.

If you want to restore the factory cadmium coating, learn about coating methods and suppliers.

i stand by the old saying do it right do it once... old bolts will only cause more trouble later down the line with rust and decay or fatigue. I still believe if people are genuinely that worried about $$ and end up skimping and cutting corners in restoring their vehicles then maybe they shouldnt be doing it. What is a few dollars for brand new bolts is money well spent in my opinion.

Wrecker bolts FTW. Obviously choose the nice condition ones and you'll be fine plus in most cases they should be exactly the same with the right length and washers on the bolts. Depending on the wrecker sometimes they wont charge you for just a handful of bolts.

Hmm, so i'm getting the vibe that people are a bit divided on this one... I'll see what I can find on my next wrecker run, if there's nothing good i'll just bite the bullet and buy some
