5 speed supra manual conversion help

ok i know theres a few threads about it already but none that really satisfy what i want to know and im sure there are a few people out there that feel the same so lets make a pretty comprehensive guide/walkthrough on how to wire up a manual gearbox...

ok i dont know much about electronics so this is the stage im up 2..





these are the plugs that are on my ecu harness.. i do not have cruise control or abs so i guess all i need to hook up is the neutral safety switch, reverse lights and speed sensor??

as far as i know, manuals don't have a 'nuetral safety switch'.

you need to put an earth cable on the box, going from one of the box mount bolts to a crossmember bolt.

the reverse sensor has two round male pins on the left side(W series) in front of the sandwich plate. you need to hook thes up to the reverse light earth.

depending on what car you've got, you could have a speed sensor or a speedo cable. if i remember right, this goes on the left side of the rear housing.

Some manuals do have a neutral switch, but are often accompanied by a clutch switch.

You will need to play about with a multimeter and the old box, find out which wires short when in reverse and neutral respectively, and do the same with the new box. Plug and play from there, as the switches are not polarized. If the new box does not have a neutral safety switch, find where it goes into the loom, and short it. From what I have come across, toyota boxes seem to have interchangeable speedo drives. So you may be able to pull the OEM drive (cable or electronic, dont matter) from the old box, and put it into the new box. The gearing will then be correct for the OEM diff. So if you change your diff, and use the tyre diameter of the donor car, use the speedo drive slave cog from the donor car.

yep, i've got my 'ol cable in my 1uz auto, exactly the same connection. whether it's gonna be accurate.......

you can work out the number of teeth required, and just get the correct cog from toyota, they should be fairly interchangeable. dont ask me the formula to work it out... im just going to get an adjustable speedo

the 3x3 plug is for the gearbox Solenoids, so you wont need that. the triangle plug is for the speed sensor if im not mistaken.

The 2 big round ones are the ones that go to the gear selector if i remember correctly.

On monday i'll post up a picture of part of the harness off the gearbox so we con compare to that to.

the single black wire goes to the starter too.

1 also goes to the heater tap on the firewall.

Pretty sure you can just plug the 2 big round plugs together and it bypasses the neutral start switch for the auto.

I think you just short the big round (3pin) one to get the nuetral start switch. Wire two of those together. Trial and error which ones though. So get some spare fuses ready.

Reverse lights is normally the two pin plug, you may have to crimp this and try it both ways until youget it working.

Guessing that the 3 wire one is the speed sensor.

What box are you putting behind it?

r154 in mz20 soarer with 7mgte... speed sensor on box is a four pin plug yet only has three wires - some people say speedsensor is direct fit but most of use seem to be suggesting that its the 3 pin triangular plug on harness

Bottom 2 wires shorted will do it. Did it to my 7m also to run with the w58.

Are all of those 3 wires dedicated to just speedo, or are they related to reverse lights etc as well??

Robbo, what happened to the speed sensor from your craptomatic?? just use that, should be perfect for your diff n all, and itll be plug n play to your factory loom.

the auto in the ma70 supra is cable driven speedo...and the r154 is in my ma61 anyway...but i do have an auto with a electronic sensor here...a340e - should work???
