I was making up some replacement earth wires with 4ga cable and crimp terminals from Jaycar, but I had a major problem finding a crimper. Would places like Jaycar or DSE have one that you could use while you were there for these sort of sizes?

i us something with large jaw force... like blunted bolt-cutters, to crimp it down, then use jet lighter type thing to solder the bugger in place.... never had one fail yetbut from connector to past end of solder wicked wire is firmly taped for strength

I use a set of multigrips, and a hammer if I need that little bit extra force.
And then butane torch to melt solder![]()

On a slightly similar note is it worthwhile to ground both the water pump and radiator to prolong their life, or would this speed up the corosion process?

Bah, my soldering iron will quite happily melt solder to a 4GA cable.Originally Posted by Hydra

You just have to scratch the gold off the connector a bit so you can get the solder to flow onto it nicely.Originally Posted by JustCallMeFrank
Re: Earthing Kits
You need to remember that everything in Japan is plug and play... from ECU's to earthing kits!
There is nothing particularly special about most of them... they are made simply because it's easier to just bolt one on than to go to the local electronics store and then crimp and solder them up.
The earthing kits are also an almost idiot proof way to avoid earth loops.
Sounds like a good article... just remember to add decent earths to ya lights though if your doing a re-wire and adding hipo lights. Interesting theories some of these bogan car mags have... Thats the sorta tech article I would expect from Hot 4s.
As for the 4GA crimpers... I used a hammer and flat screwdriver to punch the tabs down, then just used multigrips to squeeze both tabs right down, then sqeeze on the side to mash it all together nicely. Dont need solder when you have a good physical join. Plus, as i have mentioned a few times, solder work hardens from vibration and will cause dry joints if you are relying on the solder electrical connection. Although it is good to plug off the ends of 4GA cable and stop you from pricking your fingers every time you remove it.
Sucks the big one about the price of coppa going up... Townsville should see a bit of a boom with the Xstrata refinery there, and the Xstrata mine being serviced from there (Xstrata mine and refine copper for those not in the know.)
Oh, and Mos, could you throw a dialup warning on the title, dont want people being chugged trying to look. Great writeup tho, even if it was partially knocked off from another forum (or totally knocked off for that matter too)

Well the water pump doesn't really do a great deal else... Except maybe leak occasionally...Originally Posted by kingmick
You can get proper crimping pliers for such connectors, that make a much nicer looking end, but naturally they cost a bit! They look much like a big pair of bolt cutters, except with a series of different sized ends for different sized connectors. Maybe an auto leccy, or someone who does large battery installations (e.g. solar) might let you use theirs for a moment? Even a place that makes welding cables?
In your initial post you say it was from another forum... didnt say you wrote it on another forum. My bad.Originally Posted by Mos

I built my own voltage stabiliser (like those pivot box things).
I'll prob do a write up after I borrow a CRO and get some supporting evidence to prove its worth.
