Default Who knows about Tom's ECUs?

    Gents,

I just scored a JZX90 Tom's TECS ECU for an awesome price from SSS in Girraween (the guy didn't know what it was).
However, going by the little plaque on the unit itself, and the Tom's website, all I can figure out is that it has a more aggressive tune and the boost is higher.
Is it aggressive in the sense that it's going to lean out a stock motor, or is it not that aggressive?

Does anyone know any more about these? The part number is 89600-TJX92-AT

    Cheers,
    Ben

Best bet is to put it on a dyno and get them to back out when or if it all turns to shit and it leans out. If its a generic thing like the mines ecus, then like you have said you will get no boost cut, speed cut and maybe more aggressive ign mapping for 100ron fuel.

More than likely it was though programmed for specific mods like all of those type of ECU's are and its almost impossible to find out what was done to it.

Well going by the link I posted, it doesn't seem to mention anything about specific mods, apart from "raised boost" can also be raised further by intake and exhaust mods.

Would it be a safe bet to think it is a generic one like the Mines? I mean, it's in a case identical to that of a stock ECU too, so that leads me to believe that it's just got a different map via a few different internal components?

Safe to assume that its not safe to assume anything about them, if it was me and i was at a dyno day id chuck in the ecu on the dyno and see what happens so they can check AFR's etc.

IF its like the mines then yes like you say its basically a stock modded ecu with a few things removed and changed.

Plugged it in and took it for a short drive. It comes on boost earlier and has a lot more low down torque (not hard to do though since the 1JZ has almost none).

I'll keep it in there for now, but I won't be doing any hard driving until I can chuck it on a dyno for a look.

Be careful!! You really need to monitor the Air Fuel Ratios. Usually they program to dump in more fuel with the extra boost. But if your injectors & fuel system max out............

Cheap ECU just got very expensive.

I agree with previous post about Dyno tune.
    Only way to be sure.

I just sent an email to Tom's asking them what the tune does just to be sure, but I don't think I've got too much to worry about going by what the Mines unit does.
Also, the fact that it has a part number rather than just a serial number suggests to me that they're all the same out of the factory and there's nothing custom about it.

Will post here when I get a response from Tom's
