i would say possibly your igniter has a fault. Without seeing and hearing it running hard to say exactly.
Hey guys! Yesterday arvo I came back from a drive in my ta22. About an hour passed before I tried to start it again and there was no spark. It's got a Pertronix ignitor so I thought I'd replace the original coil with a 12v GT40. Swapped them out and now it turns over, runs pretty rough and eventually cuts out. You guys got any ideas..?
Cheers!

Try another coil lead. The coil will get hot and break down if it cant get rid of the spark properly.
running a ballast resistor?
A GT40 doesn't need a resistor whereas the GT40R does, so make sure you have the right one and have the appropriate voltage on the + terminal of the coil.

Due to the Pertronix ignitor I bought the non-ballast GT40. Could having a battery with low charge cause this..? Cos when the coil died I was cranking it over for a while..?
Just measured voltage at the + side of coil in ON position and it gave me 9v. This is without a ballast.
All fixed. The GT40 must be incompatible with electronic ignitions as I swapped it out for another electric one I had laying around and she fired straight up. Thanks for the suggestions guys much appreciated!
This is pretty common. Usually with electronic ignition you use a low resistance coil like the electronic coils otherwise you get the symptoms that you described. The resistance across the + and the - terminals should be less the 1 ohm.
