Sure its not just condensation? most cars put out a lot of "smoke" but its only because its cold in the mornings
Hi guys,
Just in the last week or so my st162 celica has been absolutely spewing white smoke on startup.
This continues to happen until the engine generates some heat (usually when needle one third of the way up temp guage)
I have noticed that this is not bluey smoke which may be oil but white smoke.
Wondering might this be a big problem with piston rings or valves/valve seats??
Any help would be appreciated...

hehe
yeah. cold mornings = lots of condensation.
checked your collant level, white smoke (if it is smoke) usually indicates coolant burning

could be valve stem seals
i dont have a funny or cool signature.
Has it been extra cold in the mornings in the last few weeks as opposed to say .... summerOriginally Posted by pr*duct
That might explain the white 'smoke'. It's just that the colder, denser, air in the mornings makes water vapour more visible (something to do with dew point maybe?).
Valve stem seals would more than likely imply blue smoke ... so I wouldn't make that conclusion straight up.
If there's one thing I know, it's never to mess with mother nature, mother in-laws and mother freaking Ukrainians
tis condensation in the exhaust.
case dismissed.
if it stops when you get some heat you have nothing to worry about
especially if the car is running just fine

Possible leaking head gasket or cracked head causing water to fill cylinder over night and burn up on start up?![]()

if you were getting water in cylinder you would either end up with hydraulic lock, or it wouldnt stop burning away when the car warms up.

It takes a shit load of water to get hydraulic lock up !! and only a small amount to get white smoke .
If the head gasket is only weeping it will leak under pressure and not provide enough of a prob to be detectable when running only on start up after it has sat for a while and had time to leak excess coolant.

50 millilitres into a cylinder is prob more than enough to get lock up.
and why wont it leak when the engine is running? considering thats when the water pump is doing its thing and the water is flowing around/under pressure. and hot which would usually make gaps open up further.
also, if its leaking h/g why does it go for a few minutes if its only leaking when the car is off?
i think your clutching at straws

It will still weep when running but it may be so minor that it will not effect the cars idle or drive.Originally Posted by love ke70
