    tighten in sequence, step by step
    for cam caps, do in baby steps?
    how hard can it be?

    was it ed that broke a few UZ cams? was that in the post or when installing?

    In the post from memory. I've had a couple of sets out, and never been worried about breaking them. As you said, baby steps and they'll come off easy enough.

    Regarding the compression test, I gather you reinstalled the water pump, and put the timing belt back on with all the markings lined up before testing?

    Hey mate the original noise wouldve just been an idler bearing ! having a noisy idler bearing also points to cam seals not being replaced either plus front seal . When doing a timing belt change on any vehicle it is a must to do all the seals plus replace bearings and water pump if it is driven by the timing belt and in many cases also the tensioner . If you had a bent valve it wont just be in one cylinder ! you wouldve bent more than one . Have you compression tested all the cylinders ?
