If its gotten that hot that it melts plugs, started making funny noises then stops you might be up for another engine.........
If the headgasket doesnt fail the next biggest killer will be the pistons scuffing the bores.
Hey guys, I have a 1 jz in a mx83 cressy. Only just got it all sorted on Sunday but now on the highway it's heating up badly. The temp gauge sits half way but the engine got that hot it melted the wire holder plugs between the rocker covers. (if that makes sense). I have no idea ways causing it, but it gets that hot that it stops the engine and won't start. (seems like a flat battery but after 10 minutes it will start again). It also started making a metallic sounding clicking noise which is worrying me a lot. Any help you guys can give would be very appreciated.

take it back to whoever sorted it
sounds like fans are not coming on
and whoever wired up the temp gauge they probably have done it wrong as if its normal operating temp it wont melt anything

old toyota temp gauges dont work to accurately at high temps
engine needs to ne at 130 to 150 degrees before the temp gauge reads pretty hot
Metallic clicking noise like snap krackle pop from really hot exhaust system & heat shield/s?
Waterpump belt tight?
Radiator clean, internally & externally?
Thermostat?
Puking out coolant from blown HG?
It is not the fan/s if its on the highway, they only get hot when sitting still.
Highway overheating is lack of flow through the radiator, coolant and/or air.
Also, has the plumbing been rerouted, external thermo blocked off or is the radiator trying to feed the WP from its upper outlet?
The noises sound clicking but only under load. This mornings fiddled and it ran good with no noises or heat problems at all and then it happened again. Upon further inspection there was no thermostat init at all. Just waiting for gazket glue to dry and I'll put it back together. Not sure but I filled the radiator till it over flowed and now it seemed very empty again but no leaks that I could see. Fans work fine and I don't belei e the hoses were rerouted.
