because your using a davies craig pump? or to change a leaking pump?Originally Posted by Wanabe_Garage
I have had the impellor replaced on a couple of pumps since I am of the opinion that the standard impellor does not work very well based on its design (since it is just a peice of pressed steel).
The impellor is pressed onto the shaft normally and to get it off I put the outside rotating section in a vice and touch the impellor where it is pressed onto the shaft with the arc welder. This is not enough to weld the peices together but instead it provides heat for the centre of the impelor to expand and release its close tolerance fit on the shaft.
Why are you taking it off - electric pump?

the only reason you would take it off is to run an electric pump.
beer me!
the pump will leak if you remove the impellor wont it ? doesn't the seal run on the back of the impellor
If you're doing it to run an EWP, remove the water pump pully and get a shorter belt just to run the Alternator (quick dirty easy way) or grind the blades off the impeller if it's a stock water pump (more involved hard way). The Factory Impellers are very difficult to remove without killing the water pump seal, which I'm sure you don't want to do....

true that guys its for an EWP. Ive tried heating the impeller shaft and prying it open but no good... As what you guys have beem getting at, its not suppose to be taken off.
Im planning on just leaving it then(without the belt) and see how it goes with the EWP
I found a blacktop20v manual with info on how to take it off but requires a tool SST or something but i dont know what it is nor am i going to bother with it.
thanks for the info
I removed mine by cutting it in half with an angle grinder - the bits fell off fairly easily
I also chopped the front of the water pump and welded a plate over it (need a 9" grinder for that)...
Surely there is a WST for this!
