but did you try hooking up the breather to the inlet manifold ?

No, I didn't try hooking up the breather to the inlet manifold.

I can't see the point? If it's pissing litres of oil out the breathers, what's the point of pouring it all into the inlet manifold?

The engine was full on the dip-stick before I started it, we warmed it up and then gave it a bit for about 5 minutes and then came back, turned the car off and let the it sit for a few hours.

I then check the dip-stick and it was only a THIRD full! It used two thirds of the dipstick in 5 minutes! I was horrified!

Other than broken rings and cracked pistons, the only thing I can think of is a failed head gasket blowing combustion gasses into the oil galleries, or excessive porting in the exhaust causing a leak into the oil galleries (have seen that into the coolant before)

18rg pcv valve is located under the carbies, there is a litle square box on the side of the block that is a baffle then there should be a short length of rubber hose to connect it to the valve and then that goes up to the intake manifold. Broken rings will cause heaps of smoke from the zorst and lack of compression. I would also check what oil pressure you have as you may have a jammed oil presure relief valve and that may then be forcing too much oil to the top of the engine.

Dave, not all 18rg's had the block vent.

Ok,, maybe just the later ones with more pollution control gear had them under there

Compression results from today's test are 175, 180, 180, 180. Three months ago they were 182, 195, 180, 185. Should I be worried? Engine bay was pressure washed and then car was run on hoist while checking for leaks.

It appears the dipstick popping out was causing most of the oil spraying through the engine bay.

The hoses to the crank case breather and the cam cover breather have now been clamped on properly, a spring is now holding down the dipstick, and I'm carefully watching my dodgy milk carton catch can oil level.

There is currently no oil in the bay. Shall keep driving it while watching the oil level in the catch can and for any oil in the engine bay.

Dipstick blowing out is a-typical of crankcase pressure buildup.

+1 for busted pistons. They might show up good comp while turning the motor over at cranking speed, but with extreme combustion pressures & everything spinning faster the cracks open up more & you get lots of crankcase pressure buildup. May explain why your comp readings have gone down over the last couple months too as the cracks fatigue & grow.

Had this happen to me with a 2nd hand 2TG I bought. It had good comp (~160-ish) before I put it in but it used oil almost as fast as fuel & never ran properly. ~4000km of driving I did another test & the comp was as low as 115psi on some pots. It had the stock PCV valve from the block still hooked up to the intake & just a bit of hose on the cam cover breather that went down next to the clutch slave, so I only noticed the oil use from the dipstick gauge.

After pulling the motor down the oil ring land on #4 piston had snapped off & rings were broken. Unfortunately I wasn't onto it quick enough and the bore was scored so I needed a rebore.

Have you noticed any slight (barely audible sometimes) intermittent ticking noises while the motor is idling? That noise is a good indicator of broken rings/cracked piston.

Idle the engine with the dipstick pulled out and feel for the blow by pulses. you shouldn't feel much at all or a tiny bit. but if it's blowing the dipstick out you probably
    need a tear down.
