Hey Everyone
Ive got a 1jz with a R154 gearbox. Im trying to remove the gearbox :S
The motor is currently out of he car so this should technically make it easier to remove but it doesnt want to come off. I have move it about 1 inch and this allows for the box to rotate on the input shaft, but wont come any further.
Anyone know some sort of technique to getting it off?? Would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Its a pull clutch, so you CAN'T just crowbar it off!
Slide the release fork out, then you'll have to take the pressure plate off with the box by unbolting it from the flywheel.
A pain, but thats the only way it'll come apart!
Were are these release forks?
Im new to the toyota motor and box. If u have any pics that would be appreciated![]()

jsut undo the clutch plate bolts from inside the peek holes,
then jingle it abit and the gearbox should slide out np'z
See if this helps....
thanks heaps
Will give that a go tomorrow+rep for u
EDIT: I cant give u +rep just yet... soon

man you got it easy with motor out of car..
ive done gearbox in and out twice on my driveway by myself... breaker bar on the crank held between my knees while undoing the pressureplate/clutch cover bolts throught the peepy holes, then undo IC pipes, loosen engine mounts and have to drop it on wild angle to get to the top bolts.... god i get flashbacks just thinking about it
worst is trying to operate two jacks at once dropping the box whilst using your head to balance it...
backyard EXTREEEEME!

Im sorry but why in gods name would you people be removing the bloody clutch cover for? Thats just astounding to read. Remove the clutch fork, slide the box off. Its that simple. You DO NOT need to remove the pressure plate in order to remove the gearbox. The ONLY thing that needs to be done is the removal of the clutch fork.

If you have a look at the pic from the toyota service manual (in my last post) you'll see that it says to remove the pressure plate. I'll admit right now that I havn't pulled apart an r154 with a pull clutch, only one with a push conversion, which is of course different, so I can't quote from actual experience (not that that stops most people!).
Since you seem to the the world's expert, you are 110% sure about only removing the fork?
Never claimed to be an expert at anything however I have had a reasonable amount of experience removing the R154 from various engines so I can be 1010% sure of what Im talking about. Will be doing another one on employees drift car early next week so can take a video if you likeDid my own race car a few weeks ago with a stock clutchin it, replaced by Blitz twin plate and several engine packages Ive brought in, plus my 7M turbo manual Soarer a couple of times etc etc etc... No expert, just been there a number of times

From experience we had the same problem, it turned out that there are internal bolts holding it on. We found this out, as we could get it about an inch then know more. Took us some serious head scratching, to figure it out.
There are no internal bolts holding it on Lux15m. The fork is all that holds it in place. It however is on a hook with an open side and has a spring steel clip to help it stay in place. Push it backwards and pull and the fork pops right out. Then undo the bellhousing bolts and remove box.Originally Posted by LUX15M
