Hmm... I think there could be some build up of sludge in the fuel tank - that would certainly happen if you leave it there for a few years, not driving it. And sounds like it since you said adding fuel into it "helps". I would rule out rust though. Check out: http://www.car-stuff.com/toyotafueltank.htm
If it is indeed the loom - doesn't matter how small or big it is, non-australian delivered vehicle mercedes parts cost a fortune! (eg: 590$AU for 190E EVOII rear swaybar). If you're interested in getting estimated price of parts (albeit german dealer retail price), I can give you a link - all you need is the part number. although no clue if it works with AMG parts since the part numbers are different (prefixed with B explicitly)
Or if it comes to the worse, consider a 1jz conversion :-) although not a good idea since a bone stock W202 would have been cheaper platform to base it on. Heh.

Shame the 3.6L 6 makes more power and goes harder than a 1jzOriginally Posted by bk_

Power at the crank is the same. So how can it be more power? :-)
For 6000$ you could get 15 used 1jz looms and ECUs!
In the end, it all comes to cost. You can't argue against that.
-BK.
for starter's i'd put aside questions of replacing the loom and find what the actual fault is.
"unknown engine stop while cruising" does not equate to "replace entire engine loom"...
-fuel pump/tank could be clogged - by sucking out all the old fuel and only partly refilling it you re-clogged it
-fuel pump is probably in-tank so is cooled by fuel - they're designed to cope with warmness anyway
-ignition wiring loose? should be really easy to see at night-time - but a mid-90's Merc is probably CoP or Waste-spark and at quite high voltage so spark gaps are going to be jumped easily
-the lack of use (3500km in the last 3 years) probably points to loose/dry connections
-injectors might be in need of a service/clean
-battery might be up the shit and not holding charge
-80 is just fine for coolant temps - put any concerns about coolant temps to one side and look at the symptoms: fuel and spark.
also - WTF are you doing buying a german taxi for? what happened to the crown and the MA70?
try this... put some engine oil into your fuel tank.. preferably 15W-50 or so... something like 5ml for every 15 litres
apparently there's a problem with the fuel.. and some hi-powered european cars like the C36 merc onwards have this problem.. basically anything that's over 3000 cc or makes over 250hp and comes from Mercedes will have this problem... i dunno how to exactly explain it but it's happened for a friend of mine in a brand spanking new E series 1000 kms on the clock.. some oil into the tank, 2 mins later it started right up.. from memory the stranger that helped us get going mentioned something about the fuel pump... hope this helps..

fuel pump is external, battery is great - if you see the stereo it ran for half an hour turned off, you'd agreeOriginally Posted by thechuckster

Project megap00 - Gave up and sold up. Money tree died
try it anyhoo... dealers from my side of the world do it quite often and it's supposedly on instruction from Germany coz this side of the world the petrol's different in octane, cooling and all that... the most logical explanation is the fuel pump overheating and then shitting itself.. only way to be sure is with a FPR gauge but then again after the oil almost always the problem goes away. Could be a similar symptom coz where i'm from it's all short distances.. aside from the exhaust smelling a bit funny for a little while, it goes the same and just as hard...Originally Posted by Robbos_Toyotas
