Converting old non-turbo engines to turbo is a bit of a risk, and rebuilding diesels isn't cheap. If you're trying to keep to a budget and you plan on keeping the car for a while then a V6 commodore conversion is hard to beat. Sure, the 3.8 is a noisy rattly POS that always sounds like something is going to shoot out the side of the block but donor cars are cheap, parts are cheap and plentiful, and if you're towing with it they'll take a bit of punishment and are basic to fix when things go wrong.
