Transverse transmission interchangeability.

Hello,

I've searched high and low on google and just spent 30 mins going back 5 pages on search, tech and FAQ but no joy; If I've skipped over it please point me in the right direction.

I'm trying to work out which transmissions are interchangeable between the E153 and S54. From what I've read on toyota DIY the S53 was found on the same series 3SGE as the S54 and the 5SFE and 3SFE. It also shows that most later models of celica and camry with the 5FSE used the S54. My understanding from other threads and sources was that the XFSE's used the S53.

I'm trying to convert the auto on a 1MZ and I know the standard line is E153 or if not then S54. My concern is that E153 are hard come by and generally not cheap (missed out on 2 recently less than $300), which concerns me because if I mash it, a replacement is out of the question and rebuild will kill the budget. The thing I'm trying to work out is, if I cant find an S54 by itself which model should I be looking for to gut? There are more than a few ST202/4 or ST182/4's for around 500 unlicensed but I'm getting conflicting info about which gearbox each runs. Since its almost impossible to tell them apart until they're removed I'd like to know before I waste my time and money.

Finally is there an alternative to the E153/S54 options for a 1mz? 3Vz etc? Again most of these don't even seem to be worth the scrap price on gumtree.

No one knows which gearbox the 5sFE/3sFE came with and if the E51 is interchangeable with the S54/E153?
