    Default Ta23 vented discs.

    First point of order.
I have read many of the numerous threads about the c/p/h upgrade.
This is a question that came about during a conversation withy mechanic.
I'm getting the 1ggte in the ta23 engineered.
The engineer has asked for an upgrade to vented discs.
I've talked with my mechanic about the upgrade using the c/p/h example.
He has responded with why not just use an mx Cressida vented disc and calipers.
My thoughts were that if it were so simple I'd have read about it on here.
Clearly there are other advantages to upgrading the whole shebang and that is still my medium term preference, but in the interests of sorting the current engineering requirements, has anyone simply upgraded their ra23/ta23 just by changing the disc and caliper?

Without too much photographic evidence to back me up I will provide some insights into why what you are proposing is not that easy.

The front mcpherson strut as used by the TA23, RA23, RA28 and RA40 uses a backing plate which bolts to the strut around the stub axle. This backing plate also acts as the mounting bracket for the caliper which is centrally located across the disc. To use a vented disc such as MX6# or MA6# it fowls on the backing plate and will not locate the caliper in the correct position across the disc.

The XT130 and MA60 struts use an integral caliper mount cast into the stub axle. The MA6# struts give you the wrong camber and shock length, hence the preference to use the XT130 which mounts up the Hilux caliper easily using some 20thou spacers and machining the Peugot disc down 4mm and redrilling the four holes to match the TA23 hub.

My car uses RA40 struts, special cnc machined caliper mounts, 256mm x 28mm AP racing discs and AP racing 4spot calipers. Why I mention this is that I reckon (guessing) that you could use a set of MX/MA discs on the TA23 struts/hubs using a special cnc machined caliper mount if you know someone that could draw it up in CAD and someone who could machine it out of steel.

I will see if I have any images of my caliper mounts to give you the idea.

    Many thanks for that Chris.

I suspected as much (not so much in the detail, but simply because if it was the easiest way out, we'd have seen it done on here a million times).

My mechanical knowledge is limited. I can follow what you said, now that you've said it. I'd not have known what to look for.

I'll pass this on to my mechanic before we go grabbing cressida bits.

If by some miracle I do come across a purely bolt on disc/caliper option for the TA/RA23/28, I'll let everyone know. I suspect that most permutations have been tried on here.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
I had seen that thread but it didn't really tell me (in terms I could talk to the mechanic about) why I couldn't just bolt on a vented cressida disc to the TA23 strut (the dimensions as listed in the catalog can leave the impression that the cressy disc and caliper is a straight bolt on). Willofan has pretty much sorted the reality/reasoning for me so I've just got to let my mechanic know how it's going to work.
