mx73 auto trans conversion ??

hey all,

i have a transmission thats going out on my 85 cressida. so im wondering whats needed to replace my stock auto trans (a43dl or a43de not sure) with an A340E trans from a 87+ cressida.
Ive seriously looked all over and posted many posts but no1 really answers. I even called toyota dealership and they couldnt help at all.

So if anyone has any helpful information it would be greatly appretiated.

If your stock trans is an A43DE then it should be a fairly simple swap.
Some of the wiring plugs will probably be different, but electronically they should be the same.
You may need to use an 87+ tailshaft too.

If your stock trans is an A43DL, you are up shit creek.

well i know the earlier models (5me) had the a43dl but the later (5mge) used the a43de if im not mistaken.
Would i need to get new plug? if soo what plug would i need?

Have a look at the build plate. That will tell you what you have.

Regarding the plugs, just make sure you get an autobox with a cut loom, and then if you need any plugs, it will have them all.

with a cut loom? i was just gonna buy the tranny itself and ask around for what mods need doing

im assuming using a cut loom u can just match the cut loom wirers with the wires i already have?
will i need any tranny electronics? (ie; computers, new plugs...)

soo i have an '85 mx73 with a 6mge JDM 6mge ECU. to get the A340E to word properly all i need is a A340E transmission computer? or would my ECU work?

Last time I looked, the ECT ECU's were the same between A43DE and A340E. The plug is 100% the same, and the ECT ECU physically looks the same.
Whether or not the programming is identical I couldn't tell you.

so my ECT ECU would work for the A340E, if what u say is true.

sooo for a A340E to be swapped in my 85 mx73, i was told id need a torque convertor, driveshaft, different harness, and new computer.....:/
Any thoughts on this?

but ive heard some ppl says that their mx73 drive better when it was an auto....any thoughts on that?
Also if anyone has any w58 swap parts available id love to take them off there hands, perferably bolt up parts

Ma61 stuff will bolt right up. MA70 W58 will be perfect for it just use the front half of the spool. Plenty in USA.

You might want the diff ration from a Manual Ma61 or Ra65
