    Default 4Runner 3Y to 4YE or 22RTE??

    Hey all,
I recently bought my first Toyota, a very clean 84 4Runner with the old 3Y motor & I'm looking into a low budget, low hassle engine conversion.
The easiest my research has found would be the 4YE but i can't seem to find a power output figure for this engine?
My second (preferrable due to better power) choice would be the 22RTE.
Could anyone shed some light on the 22RTE conversion please, is it as simple as the 4YE?
What is required to do each of these swaps?
Also, does anyone know where i can easily find either motor and an approximate price?
    I'm in Adelaide

    Thanks people

the 22R-TE doesnt exist in australia, i havent heard someone refer to it for a long time, they were only available in america and if i remember correctly it was a dealer option or aftermarket option available for 2 years in 1985 or something.

whats your experience in engine conversions and whats your budget? would you consider other options people have put all sorts of engines into hiluxes and 4runners from 1UZ-FE (lexus V8), 1G-GTE (2litre turbo 6cyl), 1JZ-GTE (2.5ltr turbo 6cyl) and 2JZ-GTE (3ltr turbo 6cyl)

How about a 1jz swap? or if your tight on a budget a 7m n/a gives good results, (just do the headgasket first)
I swapped in a 7mgte but got sick of it breaking diffs and gearboxes.
    Fun while it ran though.

My experience in conversions is nil at the moment, i've done a few engine/gearbox changeouts before but only keeping with the same engine not an actual conversion..

I'm hoping to do the work myself as i'm a qualified mech fitter and can do basic fabrication and wiring which is why i'd like it to be as simple as possible.

The budget i'm wanting to stick to is around $2k which i'm guessing doesn't allow for much, if any outside labour..

What's the go with the bellhousing/clutch setups with the different sixes, would there be any serious modifications to the engine bay?
    i've got the g52 gearbox,
also thinking about the newer 2.7 motor but haven't had much of a chance to look at it yet as my internet connection is painfully slow

Thanks for the heads up on the 22rte!

ok well with the 7mge/gte swaps youll need a w series bellhousing(7m or 5m commonly used behind ma61/70 supras)
    youll need a 7m flywheel or a 5m flywheel.
    A 7mge heavy duty clutch
    fab up some engine mounts
use a 7m radiator(supra/cressida e.t.c) with a large pusher fan or some twin pusher fans
Front sump off a cressida with the front facing oil pickup or pump.(easier to start this swap with a junker cressida to pinch its engine and a few other parts)
A efi fuel pump with surge tank.
You may need to play around with the power steering lines to suit your 4runner.
These are the main bits from memory but along with this is the usual new exhaust, hoses e.t.c
Your g52 will hold up fine with the 7mge but the 7mgte will break it pretty quick. If you bargain buy youd do it for around $2000.(n/a)

Thanks for the suggestion, i hadn't considered a six as i figured i'd have to modify the bay at least a little and wanted to steer clear of that sort of thing.

The 7m sounds like a really good option at the moment if no mods are required!

Any suggestion what year cressy to look out for?

    Thanks for the info

about a 89-91 model cressida, just make sure you do the headgasket and torque down the headbolts before putting it in the 4wd or youll be taking it back out later down the track with a bhg.Pople rag on the 7ms for this reason but once its done properly theyll take a bloody hammering and give the right amount of torque for a 4wd.

    Will do!

It's probably going to take a while as this is my first conversion

My thoughts may be a bit late, but I'd say the engine you go for will depend on what you want from the thing.

Fitting a 7M will take a fair amount of time (especially since this is your first conversion and you'll be learning lots and backtracking a bit) and will involve plenty of mods to other things since it's a very different engine to what was originally in there. But the result could be pretty good.

Going a 4Y will be MUCH easier (mounts and gearbox and most likely even the water piping will bolt up) though still have a few tricky bits. Though a 4Y is no powerhouse, it feels a step up from a 3Y, and smoother.
