    Default Fuel pump failure

Recently my old mans rodeo was driven around with fuck all fuel in it, parked and the next morning it started for a brief moment and died. Because the driveway is on an angle I assumed it just needed some juice and she'll be right

    No dice

    Checked for spark - ok
Pulled plugs out, cranked engine, no fuel coming out.
Check fuel pump fuse and relay - ok
Can hear whiring from fuel tank every now and then so its getting power
Pull off fuel hose to rail and crank - no fuel
Pull off hose to fuel filter inlet - no fuel

Its a Holden Rodeo (TF) which is a model known for chewing through pumps and this particular car has done one before so I followed everyone's advice and ripped the tank and pump out. There was/is a tiny bit of crud in the tank and there was a small amount of stuff on the strainer but nothing major. What I did find odd was that the fuel didn't drain out of the strainer. Its a walbro pump btw

Anyone had anything similar happen? Have I missed something?

If it is a roller style pump these things are generally built from stainless steel at high tolerances. They do not like air, I have pulled a few apart that failed very quickly in a simialr situation. What I found is that and although stainless the rollers had the slightest surface rust jamming the rotation, once cleaned up the pump ran but I could never seal it back up once pulled apart. So best to avoid sucking in air for even a short period of time.
