    Default 18RG cam/head problem :( help needed

    Hi All

my 18rg was running fine when i removed the top tensioner to replace (oil leak)

after replacing it i started the engine and it had a really loud rattle, ive removed the rocker cover and there is a large gap between number 1 exh lobe and the bucket.

i have removed the cam and measures for bend, has next to no runout.

any ideas what this could be???

( this engine had sat for 5yrs and i have had it running quite a number of times in the last to weeks)

?? any ideas would br great before i pull the head off.

I think you have bent a valve or more. If the chain slipped on the cam sproket after fitting the new tensioner the piston has kissed a valve and bent it leaving it open holding the spring down.

But I could be wrong, line up your TDC timing marks and see if the cam marks line up at the top as per specifications.

thanks willofan, i figures it could be only valve related after checking cams.

i removed the head, turn out some silly personn has buggered up the valve clearances and ground too much of the shim causing it to slip out of its pocked and give a great clearance, the engine shop are going to machine the top of the valve flat and redo the clearances correctly,

PS: what is the correct proceedure to set the cam timing, and i have read that the different rg heads had different cams, does anyone no what number means what. mine say NRP and the toyota logo?

Crank at tdc. Cut outs in cams straight up. Have patience it can take hours to get it perfect. Make sure you turn it over a few times by hand to make sure it is right.
