Cooling system TA22

Hi all,

Would like too know what I would require to replace a whole cooling system On my Ta22 celica as the one on my car at the moment has rust throughout the whole thing. I know I'll need:
- radiator
- top and bottom rad hose
- thermostat housing (not sure where to get bottom housing)
- thermostat and gasket
- hose clamps
- water pump and gasket.
- radiator flush
- radiator coolant
- temperature sensor/sender
- overflow bottle and hoses.
- heater hoses and fittings

Is there anything I'm missing? And does anyone have any info on radiators and bottom housing for this car? Can I use an intercooler instead of a radiator? the fins on my radiator are screwed.

Radiators can be recored, so do that with the one you have.

TA22's have a tendency to pop heater cores as well I think, so that's the only thing I can see you have missed from the total system.

That said, you may well be going a little over the top. Do you really need to do the bottom thermostat housingand the overflow bottle or do they just need a good clean?

Bottom thermostat housing is all corroded at the ends where the hoses hook up. The rad overflow needs a clean but def the hoses need to be replaced.

Where is the welsh plugs Allen?

......go with what SilverRA23 says first.........there are a heap of good products on the market that can clean the crap and rust out of your system........do that a couple of times and re-core the rad and see where you are at.......is it currently overheating?..........oh and make sure you get a pressure test done to ensure it is a completely sealed system and no leaks etc.......you should be able to get away with just doing that rather than fork out big $$$ for all those bits.

I was looking at the BRD Griffin alluminium radiators, Just a matter of fitting which is the problem (they are cheaper then what ive had quoted for a recore).
Here are some pictures of what condition my cooling system is in at the moment. Also, due to the engine being cast how do you clean it up, it seems to have like calcium or something on it everywhere or dried coolant on it or something like that, what would clean that up good?

Check out this link. Plenty of good products for Radiator / Cooling System flushes. Also some good rust inhibitor products. All this stuff is easily available at Repco etc

...oh and I have seen much worse cooling systems than that.....i reckon a good couple of runs through with some clean water and then a some radiator flush and she will be a lot better.

Well, i've taken the whole system out as the radiator will be getting either repalced or recored and restored. I work at supercheap auto so parts aren't that much to buy in my opinion, The water pump needs to definetly be replaced as well as all the hoses as they all snapped when taking them off the components. I will definetly get some radiator flush type stuff to clean out the internals and parts I dont replace. I took off the thermo housing and degreased it and didnt do anything to the rust inside it, might tackle it with rust convertor though.

How hard is it to convert the car to run on a thermo fan instead of the fan mounted to the pull system? I'd prefer to do this when Im in this area on my car.

.....yeah a new water pump is the only way to go ......as for thermo fan......you can either put a push type fan on the front of the rad to blow the air through or use a pull type mounted on the back of the rad to draw air through.......just be aware that you will need a 3T water pump and pulley as they have a shorter nose on them and can accommodate a reasonable size fan in the engine bay.......the 2T water pump and pulley is too close to the rad and even with a super thin fan you won't get it mounted central enough to work well.........I was on the process of fitting up a thermo fan when I found this out ......switched back to a normal fan as the difference in cooling / horsepower loss was negligible....i say stick with what you have if it is working.....as for the rust on the inside of the thermostat housing.......the rad flush stuff will be the best for this....degreaser won't do anything as you have already found out

Thanks for the advice Rabbit, I just ordered a new water pump through my work, $59.98 for it, also ordered top and bottom hoses. Brought all new clamps, new 5/8" hose, fan belt, thermostat and gasket. I'm going to try and fix up my thermostat top housing and the bottom housing with a wire brush on my drill and my dremil. Then when I put it back together I will run BarsLeaks Radiator cleaner through my car. I rethought my decision to go with a thermo fan and will keep the original set up and just paint the fan ect. Hopefully the car will run nicely after all this. Also got quoted under $200 for a new radiator or too get the radiator ive got redone (which Ill probably do) getting actual quote tomorrow morning.

Cant wait to get this baby going, Sadly I don't have my license yet and will be getting it at the end of the month!!

Core/welsh plugs are on the side/s of the block, also possibly on its back side by the firewall or maybe hidden under the trans bellhousing. The head may also have core plugs. If they don't have any major stains from weeping/seeping/leaking, I'd leave'm alone, but the cleaner you want to use MAY cause them to leak if their seal is marginal & ready to go anyway.
The radiator's core tubes are plugged but that may be just loose stuff & smegma that'll easily come out with the garden hose & some compressed air into its lower outlet.
Yeah it looks nasty, but it really ain't that bad except the snapped off piece of the pump, that rusty discoloration doesn't affect its efficiency. It's not supposed to look like an operating room or like race cars in magazines. How will you look at 40 with almost zero maintenance? Good luck.
