ok, then I got it. I just thought the term 'open source' was used for the Megasquirt similar to what it means in software design. So I can for example use any Linux build to modify it and integrate into my custom hardware (wi-fi router, ethernet switch, coffee maker etc) and then I don't have any licensing issues. Even if I plan to sell my hardware to numerous customers.
Now the idea of FreeEMS does make some sense for me.
still they have healthy price and they're not open source. Though I admit if I needed any engine/trans management I would at least start from aftermarket solution.
