Because they're black boxes. You can't add custom control algorithms or modify existing code, you're only left to tweaking the predefined set of maps. And besides these controllers cost something.

ok, then I got it. I just thought the term 'open source' was used for the Megasquirt similar to what it means in software design. So I can for example use any Linux build to modify it and integrate into my custom hardware (wi-fi router, ethernet switch, coffee maker etc) and then I don't have any licensing issues. Even if I plan to sell my hardware to numerous customers.

Now the idea of FreeEMS does make some sense for me.

still they have healthy price and they're not open source. Though I admit if I needed any engine/trans management I would at least start from aftermarket solution.

I think some of the MS licensing stuff came in after the VEMS Holy War....

At the end of the day, you can pick up the code for the MS, change it, write your own and load it to MS hardware or your own variant. If you then release your software open source, your customers could rightly use your free code with out the need of an MS license. Gslender writes code for the MS all the time and there are plenty of people who run his forked releases instead of the 'official' MS releases.
