z20 1jzgte fuel/boost cut?

Hi Guys,
Im new to this forum and im looking for some technical help!
This is my first toyota, used to the old nissan RB's...cough cough so im currently scratching my head. Iv recently purchased a 88 z20 soarer with a 1j auto g/b conversion and im having afew issues with the boost.

Setup:
Car: gz20
engine:1jzgte (all stock)
Gearbox: Stock
ECU: Stock
Exhaust: 3inch mandrel
Turbo: T70
HKS gate
After market cooler and piping.

Issue:
Just as the turbo begins to kick in, the gate opens and the car begins to jerk back and fourth like something is strangling it. My first thought was fuel cut.
Yes iv read that fuel cut on the ecu is around 13psi give or take. I dont currently have a boost guage installed on the car (im working on it) but id say im coming up to around 10ish psi when the choking happens.

The reason im asking is iv read on afew other forums that when the fuel cut occurs, the engine light should appear for about 5 seconds after the cut occurs. My z20 doesnt show any warning lights, nothing. Yes the dash does work, but shows no sign anything is up?

so my questions are:
Is this fuel/boost cut?
If not...what ya rekkon?
If it is fuel cut...should this "warning light" appear?

It's pretty hard to estimate boost by the seat of your pants.
I'd say it is most likely fuel cut from your explanation.
Before I got rid of the fuel cut on my 1j it would do the same thing and the engine light may not come on. Mine did occasionally if i hit the limit hard enough...

Thanks xman, ill install a guage and an engine management system, hopefully that should be the end of my worries. Ill keep an eye out for that engine light in the meantime.
