    Default 1jz vs 2jz

    Hey All,

Got myself an is200 which will be geting either a 1jz or 2jz engine, and i'm really not sure which one i want to put into it.

So i thought it would be best to ask your opinion on those who have owned both engines and what you think of each? I'll be keeping them in stock configuration engine, standard ecu / turbo etc. though it'll be a manual. The box will be dependant on what i can source cheap enough, or if the stock is200 box can be re-used etc.

Dollar wise, the difference between the 2 engines is about 1k, which realistically isn't all that much.

As for usage of the car, it'll be a drive over the weekends and petrol consumption isnt really relevant. But I want something that'll be smooth to drive and not a pig.

Appreciate your feedback, and look forward to hearing what complications i'd expect in putting it in etc.

    Thanks

    VVTi 1J for my money.

Cheaper than 2J, fits easier due to the single turbo (the twins are a pain in the arse from a clearance perspective).

Good for about 220rwkw running 1bar boost with the stock turbo and a decent exhaust and FMIC. You can still get Power FCs for them on eBay which is a plug and play ECU solution. The rest of the wiring will be a pain in the arse though, as IS200s run a "multiplex" ecu system and if you screw with it things go wrong quickly

The VVTi 1J also gives you some headroom for mods when the bug bites, mine was running a HKS GT3040 turbo and a motec M600 and made close to 300rwkw

Cheers know all about the is200 ecu. single turbo is also appealing

Oh, and as far as driveability goes with the standard turbo the VVTi makes it feel like an NA engine. Very nice. From a gearbox perspective the R154 with the remote shifter mount (JZX100 item) comes up in exactly the right place

i'm doing this conversion eventually also, i just bought an Auto IS200.. and i plan on keeping it auto also (a nice shift kitted A340 is perfect for me )

plus it saves me a fair bit of coin on the gear to go into it... as a complete 1jz with auto and wiring can be had pretty easilly for $1500ish or less... + 400odd for a redone valvebody... more $$ to spend on other upgrades like ally radiator, fuel system, single 35r etc...

i've done a fuel system in an IS200 when we turbo'd the 1G-FE... which was a bit of a tricky one initially.. but pretty easy when i look back now.. basically you'll need a twin pickup on what ever fuel pump you put in there, there is a nice length of flexible hose that runs up next to the pass side chassisrail as it move up the firewall - i just cut a section out, fitted an inline Z200 filter, with a neat little bracket.. and you will have to run a fuel return line..

Thanks for the input guys, think i've settled on the vvti 1jz outta the jzx100, still scared about getting the dash and that working, really want to keep it as stock looking as possible. R154 boxes aren't cheap, and will set me back about the same as the engine, which i've managed to line up for $2200.

I'm thinking for the wiring i'll just pay someone, so if you can recommend anyone that'd be great.

from what i have looked into, you will need to run the stock ECU to run the chassis electrics, and the JZ ecu for the engine (or aftermarket)... if you do go aftermarket, make sure it's half decent... not a crappy microtech etc.. your obviously spending a fair bit of $$ on the conversion, being manual and what not..

i'm still not sure myself how the fuel gauge is going to work out... that is my main concern as the ecu utilizes some witchcraft to give a super accurate fuel gauge reading, and most JZ conversions i've seen all have the same fuel gauge prob, it drops buy about 1/4 at a time.. so you have to be a little concious of how much fuel you have put in there and your range etc etc... unlike some of my fuel light warrior mates who won't even buy a car if it doesn't have a low fuel warning light...........................................

Might be due to a lot of the 1JZs coming from JZZ30s which run digital dashes, the fuel gauge in a JZZ30 goes down in roughly 1/8th tank increments (but you have a fuel level readout in the scroll dash which is accurate to 1L to make up for it)
