    Default 1jz timing belt slack

Ive come across a strange noise in my 1jz engined mx83 over the last 2 days.

This afternoon I took the timing cover off and the timing belt seems to have alot of play in it.
Its still tensioned where the tensioner is, but between the inlet pulley and crank pulley it can flap around and hit the plastic covers (at least 20mm of play in it)

The car still drives like normal, so I dont think it could have skipped a tooth, can the timing belt stretch that much?

Im assuming its time to change the belt and tensioner, any ideas?

new belt and new hydraulic tensioner mate... hit up amayama for a genuine toyota one for cheap otherwise youll pay thru the nose from toyota in aus..

for diagnostic purposes, remove hydraulic tensioner make sure theres no oil around the pin, and make sure its very tight, like need a vice to compress it tight.. also on the swingarm that the hydrualic tensioner pushes on, theres an hex head pin that it swivels on, they are known to get corroded and seize on there so check that too, also make sure you dont loose the washer thats bolted against the block as it needs that for the swingarm to work properly...

when putting it all back together i use a little bit of antisieze greese on the swivel pin.. hope that helps!

Ill start ripping the car apart this afternoon and have a look at it.

I just find it weird that it is only loose on that side and still tight on the side with the tensioner.

Now to somehow find a timing kit by monday....

Im in sydney so it should be ok. I just need to manage to get it all done amongst the other things tomorrow.

Hopefully it is the tensioner because thats an easy fix. I havent taken the rest of the plastic covers off yet though

Alright, according to Peter Warren toyota, they will have to get a hydraulic tensioner from japan.

Is there an alternative brand? It is most likely that this is the part I will be needing.

Well I had it fixed by 10AM this morning.

Ripped the radiator and everything out expecting the worst, but found that the only problem was that a bolt fell off.

The hydraulic tensioner was only being held on by a few threads of one bolt, so I just assume it wasnt installed correctly when it was replaced last time. It still looked good, so I just reset it and put it all back together.

The only problem now is that I changed the accessory belt finally, it doesnt sqeual, but the bearing in that tensioner is kind of noisy....ahh the fun...

    thanks guys for the help

sounds good mate lucky you... from memory the bearing for the tensioner pulley can just be pressed out and pressed in.. which means replacing such will only cost like $10 for the bearing and you can do the press work with a socket and a hammer....
