sand blast and repaint?
Hey all,
I will be picking up my new car in about 2 weeks time and I was just wondering if anyone may be able to recommend a way to strip some painted wheels which may have been done with a can? The finish under the black paint is likely to be the original coat with clear so I am wondering if I may be able to get to the white paint under it without drastically effecting the paint finish?
I was thinking of getting some Grafitti remover possibly?

sand blast and repaint?
a cut and polish may take the "crap" layer of paint off while leaving the good stuff intact underneath.
or i'd try an acetone or turps style product in an inconspicuous spot first.
Thanks for the suggestions, I might try get a higher grit cut and polish like what they use after a respray.

it should wipe off with gp thinners
dont put it on too wet , do a small section at a time wipe of with a dry cloth
nostalgia is not what it used to be:
if it's cheap 'export black'... hell even WD-40 would remove most of it... as i highly doubt the guy that did it would have scuffed or scotchy'd the previous paint and wax and grease removed then applied a proper matt enamel..
i would try pretty much any white sprit to remove it.. a handfull of clean rags does absolute wonders!
eg - wax grease remover (highly preffered option!! i have drums of this stuff it's fantastic!), metho, avoid turps - it's a disgusting combination of hydrocarbons that should be banished from existance...
wax and grease remover you can use 100% safely on cured enamel and 2K and even 1K acrylic clears laquer to a lesser extent.. so get some nice sopping wet rags full of it and soak the matt black... cheap 1k acrylic base coats shouldn't be a problem to get rid of without harming the original clear/finish underneath as it would most likley be a clear powdercoat finish, or cured enamel..
WOSRT case... a bit of general purpose thinners - but be carfull with this... if you start to get onto the clear or original paint under the matt black stop, and wipe off with wax and grease remover...
Wrong section isnt it?
But from a spray painters background I can say its going to be an outright PITA.. You are likely to struggle to get it all off and recover the original paint.
Sandblast and repaint is cheaper than you think. Last quote I got was 150 for a set of rims from a local bloke in Sydney.
What place in sydney is that?
Interested to know this too.. 150 is cheap
I know circle track wheels in seven hills could do a wheel repaint. They do wheel repairs as their main business.
I'd be inclined to try the graffiti remover, that has worked wonders for me in removing spray paint from painted walls, laminated timber, etc in the past.
