Its been a while since I did my 1j, but as you said I think its just a double check as i'm sure the the dot on the oil pump & crank timing gear are the same as 0 mark on the timing belt lower cover & harmonic balancer
Righteo:
The manual states to align the crank timing gear with the dot on the oil pump, put the belt around it, put the balancer on and align it with the 0 mark on the lower timing belt cover before lining up the cams and putting the belt on properly...........Problem is, I don't have a lower timing belt cover.
Every other timing belt I've done you just line up all the dots (crank + cams), slap the belt on, crank it over a few times by hand and put everything back on.
Is lining up the balancer just an added double checking stage or do you really have to turn the crank away from the dot on the oil pump?
regular non vvti 2JZ btw

your planning on never using a cover? why not wait until you have everything ? bit hard to install after belts installed...
agree with ovaxitd - unless your timing belt shat itself in the last few days, hold off until you get the lower timing cover.
But yes, as long as crank and cams are lined up all is good.
ps: your 2j needs more power![]()
Thought crossed my mind to get them but Its done 100k without them and it has a pretty good undertray.
Would be an expensive pain in the arse anyway... that being said I have no fucking idea why you wouldn't leave the lower two on at least but thats something only the workshop who last touched this thing can answer.
Belt is on, 1/2" torque wrench doesn't do 330Nm though so it will have to wait till Saturday.
