Both the NCOP and Vicroads VSI8 guidelines state that a replacement wheel/tyre combination must not increase the overall diameter by more than 15mm over the largest tyre/wheel option offered by a manufacture.
As far as I know the largest tyre offered by Toyota on the mk2 MR2 was 225/50R15, which allows a maximum OD of 621mm, It is difficult to find a readily available wider tyre that falls within this limit.
Maybe I'm clutching at straws, but could the tyre fitted to the TRD 2000GT be considered the largest manufacturer specified tyre fitted to this model? This was 245/40R17 and would open up the available tyre choices, max OD 642.8mm.
Has anyone already been down this path?
reasons for wanting really wide tyres? as i know you wouldn't be fitting grosley wide rims compared to the stock staggered arrangement (due to guidelines..)
if your worried about grip i think you would be better off focusing on the actual tyre... rather than sizes...
sizes can be calculated here - Tire size calculator
now there is nothing wrong with a 215/40 17... which is actually 2.2mm smaller in OD... something like a Khumo KU31 in that size offers INSANE grip... relativley cheap... available around $140-$150 per corner in that size so not even really that expensive for a quality grippy street tyre (just had a pair of 205/40 17's fitted, and 300FWHP use to be a problem in 3rd... now is dramatically better!! doesn't spin 3rd at all anymore and i'm not scared of corners any more lol...)
