Default JZZ20 no speedo and window motor help.

    Hey guys,
Got a couple of electrical issues i have recently had problems with, speedo and window.

For the last couple of weeks, my drivers side window has been playing up alot. At first it was running really rough then it wouldnt go all the way up and finally it has died in the arse.

1: how in the hell do you get the motor out of the door?
2: Are there any cheap interchangeable replacements?
3: can i swap the passenger side motor to the drivers side cos i need a drivers window to get into my work.

Second issue, my speedo recently decided to stop working after i changed my starter motor. Ive checked fuses and the speedo sender and i have no idea, even my odometer isnt counting up. It is throwing out error 42, which is just saying the speedo isnt working.

Appreciate any help you can give!

    Cheers, Mat

    hi matt,

few ideas, check to make sure the wiring hasnt been damaged or touching on a exhaust and shorted out or something like that. could possibly also be a broken sensor at the gearbox, if you know someone local to you maybe an idea to grab another and test it.

are you sure its the motor and not the switch? i had the switches give out on my cressida. you can test it by removing the door trim finding the connector that does to the winow motor and connecting + and - 12v to each pin, it will put the window up and down depending on the orientation. if its still dodgy you know its def the motor, if its fine then the switch is dead.

id dare say that ma70 maybe worth a look at for a motor if it is stuffed, perhaps even cressida. this is if you cant find another Z20 item.

i replaced the winder mechanism on my corolla, fairly much the same idea but.

while you have the door trim off, there will probably be a plastic sheet under it that will get in the way, there will be bolts holding the sissor looking thing inside the door, you will probably have to take some bolts off and shimmy the glass out the top then remove the rest of the bolts to drop the whole lot threw a big hole in the door. if you cant simply open your door at work, perhaps you could find a wood chock to prop the window up and lower it. or drive in reverse and use the passenger side window.

    Thanks for the reply mate.

I did check the wiring under the car from the speedo sender to the loom, and where it was connected had been fouling on the exhaust, leaving most of insulation open, so i just repaired the cable, could very probably have shorted out. What issues would a short cause on the wiring? It didnt fix it when i got it repaired, but i assumed it wouldnt, as that would just cause an issue, gotta find the underlying issue it caused.

As for the motor, im fairly certain its not the switch, i pulled it down, checked and cleaned all the contacts, made sure everything was where it was supposed to be etc, and the motor had the same issue. I didnt think of applying 12v to it but, ill try it when i have some time. I have sourced some motors and switches from another z20, which i will test and service before i chuck them in. Hopefully the window issue will be fixed!

Not a bad idea, sounds classier than pulling up, opening my door and flailing round like an idiot!
