Melting Rotors

hey guys, did a quick search regarding this topic and couldnt really find anything specific to my question.

Just wondering, has anyone ever managed to melt the teflon on an SC12? the reason im asking is because im looking at buying a GT-Z that is running 14psi and apparently has been for the past 12 months.

It was my understanding that they melt above 12psi.

Oh, and another thing, he is still running the standard top-mount IC, i wouldve thought this would be asking for trouble, should i steer clear?

I have never herd of this. I would not be too concernedabout it you can pick up a sc12 for $ 200 ..... hell i gave my last one away!


Std top mount will be fine although not perferct but wont give you any dramas.

Hey Chris,

It's not that the sc12 melts at over 12Psi, but that it tends to do so if held over 10,000RPM for periods of time. It just happens to be around the area of 12Psi, if used on a 4AGZE with a 175mm pulley.

But as the guy above said, these superchargers are a dime a dozen now, so blow away.
(Get it? BLOW.. hahah, yeah, ok.. maybe it wasn't funny).

you melt the tips of the rotors when you spin them fast enough to produce as you said around 12 pound of boost.
theres no way to make an sc12 make more boost than by spinning it faster.
so logic tells me its got a different pulley on it spinning it faster the rotors may the teflon may well have been damaged.
plus the top mount interwarmer wont do a great deal for cooling. really should be looking at FMIC if you do buy it
or water to air as mentioned ^^^

i mention this every time the subject is brought up, i ran my sc12 at 15psi for a couple of years. the previous owner ran it at 15psi for maybe as long as 5 years with a top mount intercooler in a sprinter with NO bonnet scoop. the sc had a custom pulley with no clutch ie it ran all the time and i never had any trouble nor did it make any noise.

My experience is a little different to Evo's. I ran (read: thrashed constantly) an SC12 for about 18months at 10psi. The pulley bearing failed and so I swapped it, and when I pulled it out the coating on the rotors looked a bit stuffed at a few points. However it still made fine boost until the pulley went.

yeah i didnt want to make out like they are indestructible, im only telling of my PERSONAL experience as alot of people relay stuff they 'heard'.

maybe i was just lucky, but maybe hen was UNlucky

also, looking at that pic, it appears the wear is mostly on one end. could that possibly mean there is excess play due to a faulty bearing?

Could well have been a faulty bearing. I didn't even look at it when I put it in. I just saw that when I pulled it out. I'm not even sure thats melted, may have been due to ingested crap.
