changing mechanical Hilux cluster/speedo for electronic

Guys,
I need to change the dash cluster from my (SR5 spec) RN90 from a mechanical speedo to electronic to receive a signal from the electronic signal on the gearbox after an driveline conversion. Converting the gearbox to mech is not an option, as the auto ECU needs the signal for shift points etc.

I've heard Surfs/4Runners *may* have electronic speedos, or is there any definite models that do?

I've been to my local wrecker, and it seems to be hit and miss, with the only 4Runner there having a mechanical drive, and a RN85 (single cab 2wd petrol) have an electronic but was missing the cluster... (no cable through firewall)!!

Any help appreciated.

ln106 in the luxury model (carpet and what not) had electronic speedo but not all of them, you need the top of the range model luxury pack and newer than 1990 if memory serves me correctly. Also late model surfs and 4runners in the upper models but they are 1992 and newer from memory in the upper spec models. But it is a little hit and miss they didn't seem to be consistant in exactly which ones they where fitted to.

Just make sure you get the one that suits your setup, for example if it is 4x4 and petrol get one that suit that or 2x4 diesel, cause if you use the wrong one completely half the instruments won't read. You may already be aware of that but just in case you hadn't considered it yet.

yeah thats what I found... its too random. Mine is a top spec (SR5) and its cable. Whereas the gutted RN85 base model (vinyl floors etc) had an electronic at one point because the cable entry point through the firewall had a blank grommet on it.
I really want to keep the SR5 instruments (tacho, oil press, battery) if possible, so it looks like its going to be a good look at a lot of wreckers to find the right one!.

You could also find a Toyota dash with the same speedo sweep as the Hilux and retrofit the gauge from that into your cluster. That may be the easier way to go.

one thing i have done when i wired up a hq monaro with a 6 speed gbox it had an electronic speed sensor and he wanted keep the original hq cable speedo gauge, he bought a electronic to cable converter box.

The wires from the speed sensor went straight to the module and it had a motor inside to spin the speedo cable.

Worked a treat!

As for the ecu needing a speed input signal you'll need to find out if it is a analogue or digital signal

Another option is put an electronic autometer or vdo speedo because they have and output to go to your ecu.

Ok, so I have got the new electronic speedo all mounted up. Will use a Jaycar corrector kit, no problems.... however, how many pulses per kilometre is the speedo expecting? Its from a 1993 imported Turbo Diesel Surf.
