i have a w57 & a w58 at home, & i know what cars they came from (ra60 & ma61). both have 4 bolt shifter plates. never seen a 6 bolt one.

I've been messing with these things for years but never noticed there are four and six bolt shifters. They don't seem to be G5x or W5x specific, but from what I can tell all the ones with four-bolt shifters are from commercial vehicles.
Are these all the same bellhousing bolt pattern, etc? I'm looking at getting one but can't be sure exactly which model it is, other than that it looks basically the same as the below.
In particular the box I'm looking at is from a '94 Hilux with a 3L 2.8 diesel... and 2WD, obviously. No build plate to check from, it is out of the car.

not the actual gearstick, the whole shifter mechanism. like this:
unlike the 'normal' one which has a six-bolt shifter mechanism (you can only see two in the pic but it's obvious there are six). ignore the four little screws holding the gearstick.

Yeah, seems to be the W52s and W56s which are 4bolt shifters.

which for all intents and purposes are the same bellhousing patern & yoke as a w55-w58?

The one with 4 bolt shifter housings definitely have commercial origins (had one in my G52 4Runner), and the shifter doesn't bolt on, but rather clips in.

Interesting. I understand the concept of 'clip in' but how does it work or does anyone have an EPC diagram that shows an exploded version?

Pretty sure it has a circlip at the top.

Too easy.
Out of interest i found this which shows the four bolt attachment.

The newer ones may have a circlip, but my one was spring loaded with a twist.
You push it down 5mm or so, rotate it about 45deg, and it came out. Reverse to install.

To answer your question bellhousing pattern is the same but there are differences in the front bearing carrier assy on g & w boxes.
but the adapter you have was for w series but definatley will bolt up to a G series as that is what i had it bolted to.
& yes 4 bolt shifter on all commercial box's i've messed with.
