Default Screwed my pinion gear, where to from here?

    G'day,

So i was pulling apart my diff today and got up to the stage of removing the pinion gear from the housing. I didn't have any tools to remove the front pinion bearing so i thought i might just hammer it out the back by hammering the end of the pinion shaft.

And in the hammering process I've deformed the end of it so that i can no longer get the nut on it (i'm an idiot)

Being a noob, how should i have better done this?

What can i do from here?

If thread is not damaged you could linish or file the burr off the end.
Usually pinions should just about drop out of housing due to tapered bearings, may need a slight tap with soft mallet/hammer from front bearing.
I have never had one as tight as yours must have been.

File down the damaged thread/end of shaft and begborrow or buy a correct sized die (take nut into bolt shop for die) will prob set you back around $35 for a good P&N die in the size you will need. Or get a high tensile nut in the correct size if your a ruff bugger and put it on to realine threads lol.

Judging from the slighly unclear photo, I would bet most of your damage is just the end of the shaft and the thread will be fine with a (careful) clean up with a small smooth file. Not the end of the world just a learning experiance. If something is that hard to get out , and you "have to" use a hammer eather a soft copper hammer or a plastic ended or even some hardwood between the hammer and what your about to bash the shit out of will help.
