    Default 20V Quads to 16V Bigport

    I have an import AE92 with a Bigport that I'm freshening up the motor on. I am getting the Head ported and will be running Tomei 264 Cams.

    I decided to take the opportunity to convert it to Quads so I ordered the T3 Adaptor and bought a set of B/T ITB's a few days ago; I only started reading these posts AFTER I bought the Quads and obviously didn't do enough research beforehand because I had the option of B/T or S/T Quads & chose the B/T's - bad move as I'm finding out. . At any rate the guy @ wreckers is a pretty decent bloke & he'll swap them over. . .

    I have found some posts on this subject but they're 3-4 years old and I'm hoping some extra info has come to light since then. . .

    I would like to verify the following as I want to make sure I have the basic facts correct before making my next move;

    1. I should swap the B/T ITBs for S/T units as there will be much less machining / match porting required between Adaptor & ITB
    2. I need an aftermarket ECU (i.e. Adaptronic) to make these work properly
    3. I need to get a RWD Water pump and RWD Exhaust Cam Cover to avoid butchering the Adaptor
    4. Other information I haven't picked up yet. . .

    Please advise as I had some stuff on order (i.e. new FWD Water Pump+Thermostat, B/T ITB Gaskets No. 1 & 2) & at Powdercoaters (i.e. B/T Surge Tank) that I need to change / retrieve ASAP)

    I would like an idiots guide as I'm pretty much a novice at this kind of stuff but I would like to try and set up the conversion myself - I've never dicked around with ECU's / Tuning before & need to know what equipment I will need.

    Any help would be much appreciated. . . .

    1: well blacktop throttles are quite a selable item so I say put them on ebay and buy another set of silvertop throttles, infact I can even supply you with some.

    2: very much yes, but also there isn't much you can do to an engine with the original ECU, just light cams and basic intake exhaust mods.

    3: I really doubt it, post a picture of what you have now as for the cam cover their all the same dimentions bar some minor differences.

    4: the throttles get mounted upside down, that should save you atleast 15 minutes of confusion

    The only ITB info I can add..... once installed you should syncronize the 4 throttles for best response
    Information is POWER... learn the facts!!

    RWD water pump is really only necessary if you are going to use a viscous
    clutch type mechanical fan i.e. converting engine to RWD. Otherwise just
    use the FWD one. Then you can use all your existing cooling system pipes
    and t'stat etc.

    Yes... get the ST quads. BT quads are too big for a 1600 engine.

    Adaptronic will run it fine, and use all your existing sensors. Just need to do
    a bit of wiring, and reverse the connections to the Throttle Position Sensor.
    If your engine is MAP sensored, you will need to connect the little titties under
    the T3 adapter to some kind of vacuum reservoir, and take you MAP signal
    from there.

    Cheers... jondee86

    Hi Sam,

    1. I'll get back to you in 1-2 days but if he replaces them that would probably be the easiest solution; < only complication is the TPS @ below>. I guess it also depends on selling price? & if it’s a complete assembly so I don’t have to go chasing down fasteners, piping etc.

    When I got the ITBs I noticed TPS casing was cracked but I had a deadline for getting car together & de-cluttering the yard so I bought them anyway. New TPS is - $150 so I’d like to request a good one.

    I have a couple (OK 3) other ITB related questions;

    I. I take it the B/T and S/T TPS are not interchangeable? (diff part # in ToyoDIY)
    II. What standard checks / preventative maintenance should be done on 2nd hand ITB’s apart from checking;
    > Flange faces are flat with straight edge & feelers
    > Linkage action is smooth
    > General condition of hoses/piping
    > { i.e. should I change TB#2 Gasket # 2224-16760 ???}
    III. Should I stick with OEM injectors or go larger?

    2. Have been offered an Adaptronic for $600; I'm no expert but this seems a reasonable price.

    3. Picture attached. OK; admittedly a bit lazy with this Q; should have just Googled “AE86 Engine Bay” . . . < like I eventually did>. Outlet’s ˝ way down the Inlet cover just like AE92. Nothing jumps out as being different.

    4. Thanks; I think did read that somewhere. . . I also have to reverse the wiring into the TPS right?

    Bottom line – will I still need to remove material at corner of T3 Casting? If so, can I “spread the damage” but grinding the adjacent face of the Water Pump? (I have the old one to experiment with).

    That should do for now – once I bolt all this together I’ll check Posts on how to wire this thing up via an Adaptronic.

    Thanks . . . But you're giving me more credit than I'm due. I am OK at sussing out mechanical stuff and some basic Electrical stuff* but playing around with Engine Management is something new for me (i.e. vacuum reserviour??). I need to do a bit more reading. . .
    * (i.e. extending Starter Motor wire to inlet side for C56 Box (what IS that extra sensor on G/B casing for anyway?) and branching O2 Sensor wire out of loom closer to bulkhead to run under car (I picked up FGK Headers / downpipe but they're for an AE111, and the Sensors in the downpipe)
