W5x's are fairly strong yeah. Steel case ones especially I am told, but I have seen the alloy case ones punished too and they survived.

    Bit of mis-info here.

In the photo is a steel case celica box (also used in Crown's in the 70's) and is a W50.
Not as strong as a W5x box (W55, W57, W58), but still strong.
The box referred to in the above post is the steel sandwich plate W5x box, which is the post ~1988 version, which is stronger than the alloy sandwich plate W5x box (~1981 to 1987)

ah yes, sorry cruzida, you are correct, i used poor choice of words.

steel case is w50 = weaker of the w series boxes

    alloy "sandwich" plate W55, W57 & W58 stronger

    and

    steel "sandwich" plate W55, W57 & W58 = strongest in W5x series

Apparently the W50 boxes from behind 6 cylinder motors were stronger, had a larger front bearing or similar? Been a fair while since I read that info though, was in an old magazine article. Mate who had a 289 powered 2WD Hilux (maroon one that ended up in Tauranga at one stage) used to smash W50's fairly regularly but he was doing a lot of skids with it so that didn't help.

Yeah, the 4cyl W50 had a ball bearing on the input shaft, where as the 6cyl W50 had a roller bearing.
