I saw the rods... and just a bit of the skirts... it appears from your rod photo that the AE92 4AGZE has full skirts, and the AE101 has cut down skirts.... is that what you are trying to say????


Btw... if I might ask about your thread... how can a smallport make its power @ 7200 when the late TVIS engine uses the exact same cams but can only twist to 6600???????

the thread was to enlighten you as to the two different types of 4AGZE pistons. All pre-AE101 4AGZE pistons are the same 8:1 style pistons with no oil squirter notching, whereas the AE101 ones are the 8.9:1 style with oil squirter notches.

As for the power output, dont ask me, ask toyota, that's their factory specs Could be many different reasons. The bigport and smallport engines have vastly different engine characteristics.

Also, I must agree with everyone else here in terms of the oil squirters. The 8.9:1 pistons were also ceramic coated unlike the earlier ones. The ceramic coating along with the oil squirter notches is a pretty good indicator that they were trying to dissipate hotspots in the pistons *imo*

fitting 8.0:1 gze pistons greatly affect the responsiveness of the engine. I've assembled 2 of them in a small port in 2 separate rebuild and i don't really like the laziness of the 8.0 during off boost response. Only choose 8.0 when you aiming for big boost (more than 20psi).

i've puled down a number of 4agze motors in my time, & have found several early motors (ie aw11) that had ceramic crowns on them.

in fact, bar the cutouts for the oil squirters i don't think there is any difference in the pistons between early & late motors.

would be interesting to cc a small port & a bigport head - as if my suspicions are right, that is where the difference in c/r is....

The part numbers for the smallport and bigport gze pistons are different, and correspond exactly to the dished and non dished pistons.

It could be that toyota now supply the 8:1 pistons with ceramic coating when they originally didnt. Even so, every aw11 gze ive seen pulled down which was supposed to be an original engine (about 5 of em now) has had the dished 8:1 pistons with no ceramic coating.

I have come across these pistons,but i'm not 100% sure what they are.they are meant to be 3rd series 4agze pistons.

these are AW11 4agze ones, they certainly look alot deeper on top than tha original ones pictures

thats the difference.
the flycuts go to (afaict) the same depth on both.. at lest with my measurign tools.. but the dish volume is different, hence the 8 and 8.9 CR..
so you could easily work back and calculate the difference in dish anyway....

btw, i don't think it is exactly a ceramic coating either....

maybe i should finish that piston thread one day....

Yes some ae92 pistons will have notches as all the smallports eg: any sx or GTi model will have a 7rib block with oil squirters. Its not just the 4agze that has them.

and the 1990 this isn't accurate, my 1989 seca had a 7rib 4age in it and it had squirters.

Thats not completley true. The late AE92(90-91) 4AGZE was smallport, dli, map and had 8.9:1 pistons.

I have only seen an AFM bigport (8:1) with DLI released in the AE92 GTZ. I know this cos I swapped one of these motors into harreh's aw11 only recently

The smallport 8.9:1 engines ive only ever seen in the AE101 GTZ. Can someone provide some sort of proof that the smallport 4agze was released in the AE92? Club4AG/wikipedia both say it is so, but they are both prone to errors. What does toyoDIY say? That would probably be the best indicator.

To correct myself it was 8905-91 not 90-91.

My info isn't hearsay, its very common to find ae101 slugs in early model gze's as the wrist pin is the same size and the 8:1 pistons are discontinued since 91.

I don't think it is wise to use ToyoDIY as your source of information, part numbers match as some parts are discontinued since formation of that specific website.


as per your last pic, all listings are for ae101 released gze's as the previous versions were all bigports.
