Default stronger diesel for 87 hilux4wd?

Hello. I couldn't see this anywhere so I"ll just ask: is there a better diesel available for my 87 Hilux dualcab 4wd. The 2.4 litre in it is not strong enough to get me home in anything higher than second gear and towing a trailer would probably be impossible. (I live on a steep hill.)Why bother? It was my dad's vehicle, I like it, and it's in good nick. I am not even going to pretend to be mechanical and would have the work done professionally. I would hope to spend less than $6000. Thanks for your advice.

You might be better off selling and getting a whole new car.. add 6k to whatever you could expect to reasonably sell your car for and see what that could afford.

Is it a turbo diesel? (your current car)

If not; Anyone know about turboing the 2.4 diesel?

Here is the wiki for the 2L engines:

I gather yours is a 1987 with a 2L-T, but I'd need you to confirm that.

Buy a wrecked later model diesel 4WD and swap the required bits over. I like the early 4WD body shape but the small motors and 4-speed boxes do not make them a useful car on bitumen.

Also, $6k is simply not enough for any kind of swap that doesn't involve you doing any work. And buying/rebuilding diesel motors is more expensive than petrol donks - god knows why as they build/built so many of the bloody things.

Try to get hold of a diesel engine out of a surf. They normally had turbo diesels in them. Some of the 2.4 litre diesels had roller cams in them and went better than the engines with a flat tappet cam. The 2.8 and 3 litre diesel engines will bolt straight in where your 2.4 is. Some versions of the 2.8 went better than others. There was a wide rocker cover motor and a narrow rocker cover motor and one went better but i cant remember which one.

There's some awesome 4 cylinder diesels getting around these days. Awesomely expensive too, though.

The 1KD-FTV from very late model Hiluxes is the cream of the crop and most likely out of your budget, but it produces 352Nm of torque from 1800 to 3400 RPM! I'd seriously consider fitting one of these to one of my Crowns. If I weren't so love struck by the 1VD V8 Diesel though KD engine from Wikipedia

Back to reality: if your budget can afford the KZ series diesels, that would be great. They are the replacement to the L series. A mechanical injection KZ-T has 287Nm at 2000 RPM, the electronic version is surprisingly not much better. There will be obligatory stuffing around to get it to fit though. KZ engine from Wikipedia

Otherwise, find a Hilux with the 2L-TE, almost as good as the KZ engine mentioned above: 241Nm at 2400 RPM, should be a direct drop in as far as mounts are concerned. Of course, will probably require a rebuild. 2L-TE from Wikipedia

The 2L-TE should be a great step up from the non-turbo 2L at 165Nm at 2400 RPM.

To add to dazza's comments: there appear to be kits for turboing the 3L and 5L diesels.

My thoughts and opinions, hope you find them useful
