Have a look at the firewall build plate.
You'll see G40 or W40 (or something similar).
That will tell you what box you have.
Once you know that, you can determine which 5 speed will bolt right in.
as above.
my 4speed manual box is gone its a 18r motor
whats a good box 4 these?
can u get a 5speed
thanks 4 your time

sorry just had a look its a L40
Whats wrong with it?
sloppy n i cant get 3gear or 4th
i have one out of the other hilux but was hopin 2 get a 5speed
If its sloppy and wont go into gears then it is just the bushes on the bottom of the gear lever. it is a very common problem. The original bushes are rubber and i made some out of teflon when i had my old RN46 Hilux. There is a ball and socket on the bottom of the gearlever that wears out too.The socket is teflon or nylon and wears out so i made my own too.
I was told that i couldnt put a 5 speed behind the 18R because there was no way of mating one to the transfer case. That was years ago.It would be worth checking to see if the gearbox and transfer case from a hilux with a 22R engine will bolt up. The 5 speed box is longer than the 4 speed so you would need to use the front shaft from a later model with a 5 speed because it is 50mm longer and then you would have to shorten your rear tailshaft. The later model drive shaft flanges use bigger bolts than your ute has. Yours will have 8mm bolts and the later models use 10mm bolts.
thanks 4 that dazza
i can c what u mean about the rubber mine ant even there how did u fix it?
I made some up on my lathe by tuning down a piece of teflon. They are just like a washer with a piece that is stepped out in the centre so it fits neatly in the hole in the housing. You could probably just use washers, but the gearlever might vibrate a bit. I suppoose you could always try a toyota dealer and see if they still make the rubbers.
if i payed you would you make them?
you can get them cheap as chips I belive. I did it about a yeah ago and i think i paid about $16 from lunds im sure you could prolly get em from repco bursons etc
what are they call tho?
Gear shift bushes i think. Personaly if your going to keep the car i would do the 5 speed conversion i got a cheap 22r box and transfer 180 000klms in Cairns, QLD do the motor too hahaha i belive thats the only thing that let them down was lack of power.
how much do you want for the box?
$300 ish Andrew (07) 40 283 289
ive prolly got the tail shafts etc to get it sorted to
