Never done it but it will be a bit of work (needs whole fuel system from the donor vehicle).

Gearbox will be different as you'll need the rear snout/hardware from a 4WD box to join the '93 box onto the older 4WD transfer case. Would be 28 times easier if you got a complete box+transfer from a 3L driven 4WD.

Bellhousing on the older 4WD box will not bolt up to the 3L motor.

Check the transmission code on your '81. There is a slight possiblity that the bellhousing from the later box will fit your 4wd transmission. It is a huge job to change from petrol to diesel, however owning a 3L powered 4WD Hilux, I can say that the low down torque is very desirable. Your diff ratios may be out of whack for the diesel though (lower revving than even the sluggy 18R-C)

Is it hard?? Depends how good you are and what tools you have. If you have never tried anything like this, and find changing the toilet seat hard, then it is pretty well beyond you. If you can dismantle a nuclear power station without leaking radiation and put it back together somewhere else, you are in good stead. I would find it reasonably comfortably, but neither of my brothers could do it, so how hard will depend solely on you.

As for the 'what works and what dont?' question, your gramma dont. Shortening words and skipping gramma is for txting, leave it there.

If you put a 5 speed box in you will need to change the drive shafts too. The front shaft is 50mm longer on models with 5 speed gearbox and you will have to shorten the rear drive shaft. The diff ratio will be too low if you are running standard height tyres. If you run 33 inch tyres the diff ratio will be ok.
If you want to stick with a 4 speed gearbox, use one out of an LN36 or LN46 Hilux because the bellhousing will bolt up to the 3L and it is a stronger gearbox than the 4 speed that is used with the petrol engines.
