Default Rust repair advice - front windscreen

Hi all, there was some rust bubbling up under the front windscreen on the coaster so had it removed and I sanded it all back to metal right way around.

I have welded metal patches into any actual holes.

But... I want to get some advice on the lip that goes around the window. The whole way around it is a big dodgy and had previous repairs. The photo shows the general appearance of it. As it's like two layers of metal, some areas one layer has rusted and some areas it's fine.

Now I really dont want to cut the whole lip off and make a new one. I really would like to treat it with some rust converter, etch prime and paint. Will this be ok, or is it really going to bite me badly later?

If it lasts me 2 years or so I would be happy.

Joel, you can cut those rusted weak parts out. Use a 1mm cutting blade on an angle grinder for the cuts and use a spot weld remover drill bit. The replacement strips of metal should have a few of holes drilled into it. When the metal is in place, you then fill these holes with weld effectively creating a spot weld replacement. Any uneven edge here where the screen seal goes can be a potential leakage point.

Alternately you could use a decent rust converter, prime and paint, and ensiure there is a shitload of sealant pumped in under the windscreen seal. Just remember these thin areas will be weak as piss, and could move around a lot when putting the screen in.

    cheers Chuck.

When I resprayed my car I wanted a long term solution. I took it back to metal, used phosphoric acid anywhere there was rust to get it back to clean metal and then used a special paint called POR 15. This stuff provided a nice thick coating around this lip and where the seal sits. Never had any rust since....

Whilst yours look to be in a worse state than what I had, I think a good coat of POR 15 might do the trick.

POR15 would be the go. KBS Coatings has a similar product. The advantage of these products is that they are extremely scratch resistant, so the bits of dirt that get under the screen seal won't rub through them in a real hurry and cause further corrosion. Best to try like buggery to get in the inside of the lip join to seal that up too (best to do this first before you seal the outside)

Yup, this is a job for POR15.
Do the 3 steps though with Marine Clean, Metal Ready then the Rust Preventative Paint (all are POR15 products).
