Default 4AGTE & Disco Potato Opinions

    Hey Everyone,

Currently have a 4AGTE setup using a T3 flange turbo from an RB20, at some stage this or next year I would like to change the turbo and shoot for something around 170kwatw with fairly low lag & BB type. Just wanted to start the learning process and gather as much info as I can between now and when I decide to maybe take the plunge.

Doing a bit of reading and asking a few people I know that have done some 4AGTE setups the good old disco potato GT2860RS has come up a few times, just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on this as a setup or even better hear from some people that have done it and what they think.

I am only just starting to learn about turbo setups and come from a SC background, I am not looking for insane amounts of power, just would like to find something to give me a reliable 170 to 180 kwatw. Car is running EMS stinger and has bigger injectors rest of the block and head is stock from what I know.

Also if there are any T3 turbos people might think would be good for the job would love to hear what you think, I was temped to throw a second hand Rb25 turbo on in the meantime but don't know how it would work compared to the RB20 one currently on there as in more lag with not much power gain, from what I know it should not be much work to throw on an RB25 turbo in the meantime apart from a tune, but this could just be a waste I am not to sure.

Would love to hear anyones opinions or advice.

Can I clarify.. do you currently have it up and running with the RB20 turbo? How do you like it, etc? That's probably your best indicator in choosing your next turbo.

I had a GT28R on my CA18 and it was great. The DP is a little larger, and the 4A is a little smaller, so I'd consider the DP to be on the larger side for a street-oriented 4AGE. I haven't got any first hand experience but base don general knowledge I'd say it would be a fantastic match.

Bear in mind a DP is a T2 flance not a T3 flance so you will need to modify your manifold.

I think the disco spud may be a little big if you are looking for 'only' 170ish at the wheels. My old car made about 210 at the wheels with a spud, .64 exhaust housing. A standard S15 200sx BB turbo may be a better bet as it will offer slightly better response than the spud, and will still easily hit 170kw, although I'm not sure how much of an 'upgrade' this will be over a rb20/25 turbo, i think you will easily hit 170 with an rb25 turbo.
Although, never underestimate the temptation to turn up the boost a bit... haha. Once you get bored of 170kw, you will be better off with the disco if you want to crack 200 and higher.
On my old car, after I upgraded from a t25 to the gt28rs, there was a noticeable increase in lag lower down, although above 3500rpm the response was amazing!

I think if you can honestly say all you want is 170kw, then go for a standard t28bb, or rb25 turbo. But if deep down you know you will crave a little more down the track, get the t28rs.

    Hi Guy's,

Thanks very much for taking to reply hey.

Looks like I no longer need to look into turbos for a 4AGTE as I am going to sell the car I was looking at changing the turbo on.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply tho.
