Ryley,
Mine does it as well, if you remember? When I depress the clutch, the noise goes away, but on idle you can definitely hear a whirring/rattly noise, with an occasional hard tap. Pretty sure it's the thrust bearing.

Need a bit of direction-
After brief spirited driving, my 7MGTE MA61 (W58) begins to have a medium/deep pitched rattle- but only when the car is in neutral with my foot off the clutch. If i turn the headlights off (engine speed increases slightly), the rattle decreases significantly, and is barely there. You also can't hear it whist driving, only at idle with headlights on (approx. 600rpm). Driving the car is fine with no side effects.
Because it does not do it when the clutch is depressed, and the sound seems to be coming from the middle/rear of the engine, I'm guessing it's clutch/flywheel related.... ?
My Haynes Supra book (haha) says it could be the following:
1. Clutch bearing
2. Clutch rivets loose
3. Clutch cracked
4. Fatigued clutch plate torsion springs.
5. Input shaft bearing worn
6. Damaged main drive gear bearing
7. Insuffecient transmission Oil/ In poor condition/ Could be full of shit and dirt etc.
8. Variations in engine torque- play with idle speed.
From my somewhat vague explanation does anyone have any ideas or had a similar problem in their car?
Perhaps the 7MGE and brass button clutch upgrade will have to come sooner than I thought?
Thanks in advance
Ryley

My 7MGTE W58 combo did this too.
When I removed the pressure plate there was all loose stuff in it.
Dunno what it was, didn't really care, but thats what I put the sound down to.

I have the exact same problem, its been getting louder and louder over the months. Havn't heard any hard taps though yet.
Mine did it too.
Put in a new thrust bearing and she's whisper quiet now.
